Well we had a really bad morning yesterday. My poor old lurcher had still not eaten - approx 4 days, he had not responded to the antibiotics painkillers etc. he was totally disorientated, his back end kept collapsing as he tried to stand up, I rushed him to the emergency vets convinced we were going to have to PTS.
Vet did a thorough examination, his temp was badly up 40 degrees, his heart was racing but his hydration was fine as he was drinking. She immediately came to the conclusion that he had an infection in his heart. He was given 2 very strong antibiotic jabs. and heart tablets. Plus she took bloods.
3 hours later he had perked up, he wagged hs tail at me and took half a tin of tuna. At 6 pm I managed to get him to eat 2 tablespoons of boiled chicken and rice mixed with natural yoghurt, at 8 the same again and at 11 he had a small bowl of full fat milk.
Today he had relapsed again, was very wobbly and would not eat, so another emergency vet trip, more antibiotics, and his temp checked, down to 39.3 so still too high but reducing. he has refused food till about 7pm then managed to eat his way through two sachets of cat food, would not touch the chicken and rice or tuna. then at 9.30 he has just eaten a small tin of tuna and a small bowl of milk.
Tomorrow he will have the jabs again and hopefully he can beat this. The blood results have come back and his liver, kidneys are in perfect order, His lungs are clear and he hasn't got pancreatitis. Not bad for a 16 year old dog
He is on the mend, it will be a slow progress as he is old, but if I can keep him eating - no matter what it is then his chances improve dramatically.
Thanks to everyone who made suggestions.
