Just an update for those who wanted to know what was happening!
met up with the police where the pony was and they basically told me to do what i liked with him!
they said no one had reported one missing/stolen and they thought it unlikely it was a gypsy one as they said they are normally on the phone within the hour if one of theirs goes astray.
as we couldnt get him to our place due to snow and ice the police got in touch with the family who live closeby who have a field with their house (lots of shelter). They are not horsey but were more than happy to put him up. we have provided them with a headcollar and hay and went to see him tonight and he trotted over to the gate looking very happy!
as for what happenes to him now were not sure. we have exchanged numbers and i'll be calling in regularly to give help advice until we decide what is to be done with him.
so all in all, we have a safe happy pony for tonight
