Doog had the painful area dug a bit by the vet Thursday and we finally started draining stuff from it, first of all blood, then pus, then grey pus now this evening some more blood. He is much sounder now and feeling alot happier.

When do we think it will stop draining?! Its never ending! Am having a shoe put back on tomorrow as the hole is in the sole by the frog so not near the shoe and I will continue to poultice till it is clear. Seems to be taking forever!

I agree it does seem to take forever I think caution is needed to make sure all trace of the pus is gone.
I have been have a problem with an abcess for weeks now.
The farrier thought it was sorted so shoe and pad put on 7 days later the horse was not bearing weight on that foot at all .Vet came out and discovered the abcess had track under the frog!! A large area needed to be cut to allow it to drain almost straight away she was lots better but I am reluctant to seal the foot for a good few days as I don't want to be back in the same situatuion yet again .
This all started over a month ago with a small abcess.
The vet says its abces weather as it has been so wet lately.Mind you she is a typical sensitive footed T/B!!
Good luck hope you can draw a line under it soon I know I seem to have my head under a horse sorting out a hoof for weeks now !

Holes in their feet heal quite quickly once the process 'starts', so fingers crossed it won't be too long before he's back in work.

Flo had a 1cm hole in her foot Xmas 2008 (which she was v lame on for a while as the sensitive sole started to overgrow through the hole ), but once we stopped it poking through (copper sulphate and stockholm tar dressing, plus pressure) I would say the hole was completely sealed over in 10 days and she was able to be ridden again.

I used a hoofeeze boot (google it) which was the best thing ever as it meant she could still be turned out (and I even rode her in it very lightly in the school a couple of times with no rubbing).

keep that poultice on until there's no chance of anything else drawing from it!
having had a horse have 18 months off after an abscess burst out from the top - a few extra days of poulticing is sooo worth it!

Another update! Am on day 6 of poulticing after the hole was dug and im still getting a tiny bit of pus and a bit of blood he is 100% sound so I started riding this morning just went for a walk then hot tubbed and poulticed again (he is still in) farrier out Tuesday to re-shoe him and put pads on the front so I hope it stops drawing soon!!
