Tonight I went into the paddock with a couple of friends on their horses and did some transitions with him. He started to listen after a few minutes and we managed a lovely turn on the forehand and also some rein backs and even a bit of canter work
. Instead of tapping him with my whip I tap my boot and the noise is enough to get him listening. We did a bit of jumping as well so thanks for all the great advice
