My 19 year old pony went barefoot with a reputable trimmer three months ago. He hated it, very unhappy on hard ground such as tarmac or packed tracks and hopped about if he stood on a stone . Farrier who was asked to give a second opinion reckoned he had very thin springy soles and was obviously unhappy unshod after 15+ years with shoes.

It got to a point where he could just about tolerate walking 5 mins up a rough track to the menage with tiny, tiny pinsteps. I stopped leading him up the lanes due to his feet bleeding from the frogs last time I tried. I felt dreadful about it .

Anyway his shoes went back on today, HURAAH!!!

His face was a picture when the first shoe went on, he put his foot down and clonked it about with a 'well this feels right at last' look on his face! I took him on a hack and he dragged me mounted over some stoney ground to a bit of grass. he then strode down the lane to the country park , once he got used to the sentation of shoes again he took of in his best extended trot outpacing the horse with us who couldnt keep up in a canter! He then passaged most of the rest of the ride! Such a happy happy boy tonight.

I am so happy , I have my old pony back at last. He was Mr Perky in his stable tonight, he has been Mr Miserable for the last three months.

I do genuinly wish the shoeless thing had worked for us, but unfortunatly pony thought otherwise (for those who dont believe animals have strong opinions / I am anthromorphasing, sorry but I belive that a pony/horses wished should be considered about 45% their view, 55% ours if that makes sense).

ANyway, kid at the yard said it was the first time she had seen me smile since she moved on the yard. I feel like my face will split if I grin anymore!

I did the barefoot thing when we had foot and mouth (couldn't ride anyway, although I could lead out on tarmac for about half a mile) and got to the riding part, galloping etc, but Harley had lost his 'spring' - we went back to shoes, and I know what you mean about the grin splitting your face! Fast forward to about a year ago, shoes off again due to my knee op, horse happy in the field, trialled Old Macs on his fronts - never gone back to metal shoes! He is very happy in his boots and bare behinds, we have stoney tracks but he doesn't falter, and I'm now paying £20 for a trim instead of £68 for shoes, which the bugger used to pull off playing games climbing the stock fencing!

Ditto that. My girl went into Old Mac's after we tried going shoeless for about six months, it was a disaster. She can;t be shod becuase she has arthritis but to be hones the boots have been such a success I would really need a good reason to sho from now on. If the next horse we get has good strong feet I will be going down the boot route again.

I freely admit that I am feeling quite tearful (in a good way) reading this! I am so glad your pony is happy again - and that you are too!

Bless him, glad you are both feeling good again, sometimes things need to be tried to know if they are any good, knowing when it's time to say enough is the clever bit

thanks all, I think overall I have learnt from this. I now am an advocate of go for what your horse likes and sod what any one else sayd and thats about it really. I hope that every ones horses, shod or barefoot etc are happy in themselves cos in my view that all that matters.

go for what your horse is happy with
i tried barefoot for 9 months and we had to have boots on fronts as thin soles, we tried every boot but due to her action they kept moving/twisting. then she got diagnosed with arthritis in hocks and vet recommended remedial shoes so on went the shoes and she was so happy straight away. she was striding out and much happier
i wanted barefoot as i thought would be better for her but now its whatever suits. we also tried treeless saddle and have gone back to treed as she goes better in it!

Awww....love his heart!

He's obviously feeling much happier with shoes on. Barefoot doesn't suit every horse. I left my horse barefoot after I had an accident and was unable to ride. He was fine while he was turned out in the field, but as soon as I was able to ride again and we started hacking out, he developed an abscess in one of his hooves. Farrier thought it was probably down to him being barefoot. Glad he's back to his normal, happy self and you're smiling again. Bet you look like you've slept with a coat hanger in your mouth!

Prime example of what suits one does not suit another - You have done the right thing for your horse ! Good on you now go and enjoy him !

(out of interest did you put 4 or 2 back on?)
