It's horse shampoo that caused the problem. The horse came in from the fields covered in lumps and bumps that weren't there in the morning and the biggest lump is where the skin's rubbed off. There were no lumps when I tacked him up but he had been bathed for a competition so they must have been lurking below the surface. He reacted to a different shampoo last year.
Anyone have any ideas for hypoallergenic shampoos? I think I'll use human varieties next time.

I use Lavender Wash after exercise and love it, and Johnson's baby bath (blue one) or their kid's shampoo (yellow one) on my sensitive/itchy Connie and she's fine with it. Hope that helps.

Check for bottles which say hypoallergenic.

My horse has sensitive skin and I can only use one fly spray on him. He does well with johnsons baby shampoo for baths with the added bonus that it wont hurt his eyes.

Just had a similar reaction with our other horse as well. She was stinking and needed a bath but was impossible to ride afterwards, going absolutely crazy as if the flies were biting badly and you could see the urticaria. She must have been desperately itchy whereas the boy made no fuss. I've just hosed her off with cold water and she loved it so I've left her in to dry off and calm down.
