Firstly thanks to all who replied with words of wisdom and shaking me not so gently back to my senses!

Friend went and tried him for me today - she rang over the moon with praise for him and said he would suit me down to the ground. So I've managed to round up a vet local to them and vetting is scheduled for Tuesday.

As I wasn't there, and in fact neither was the seller (her head girl dealt with my friend) I haven't paid a deposit. Now I'm just nervous that someone else will snap him up over the weekend as apparently they had viewings planned. I've offered to send something electronically - Paypal for example but she doesn't have the facility.

Fingers crossed I'm not gazzumped, and that he passes the vetting.

So if any of you can recommend any horse transport companies that could bring him from near Banbury to me near Eastbourne, please let me know!

I foresee a weekend of butterfly-consoling booze and chocs (so its not all bad!)

Where is Banbury and where is Eastbourne? I can reccommend Equines in motion if you're London way, or giddyup if you are around the Cheshire way.

furlong horse transport and equine express good and both not too far, furlong closer - hastings way and cheaper. used both several times no problems. both on internet.

Glad to hear it seems to be working out OK for you. Most people are decent - it's just the small minority who aren't that should have their a****s kicked if only for causing buyers like you to gnaw their nails down to the elbows.
Looking forward to seeing pics when you get the horse home

No, I'm not, and I know that sounds just crazy but I just don't have the time; my groom quit leaving me in the lurch with 7 neddies to do; one's just got lami, ones back from horsepital after hock surgery, one has to have back physio/rehab every day, one has been kicked and is hopping lame, new colt just arrived, and I'm down to half turnout as have just had half the fields sprayed so am really juggling, plus kiddo broke up from school yesterday and I don't have an OH, so really can't get away...

I wouldn't be doing this if my friend who was able to see him for me wasn't just the best person in the whole world to do the job, and I trust her opinion implicitly. I know its a gamble but sometimes you've just got to go with it...

You can come and visit me in the looney bin if you like and say I told you so when it all goes horribly wrong, but please bring jaffa cakes..
