I've posted a couple of times in the last week about Ronan's unexplained collapsind when the girth was being done up. Anyway, vet has been and thinks that it is a neurological disorder, possibly kissing spine, as he has an overexaggerated response to neural stimuli. We are being x rayed next week to know for sure. My vet is usually straight up and tells it how it is but said that at the moment he is reasonably confident that he can treat Ronan successfully either with medication or an op.

So I was was wondering if those of you that have dealt with neurological problems, including kissing spine, could let me know of your experiences (good and bad!) so I can get an idea of what to expect.

My friends Haffy got diagnosed errm, 2 years ago now.
But because she had been ridden, jumped ect without my friend knowing by the time the vet diagnosed it she was too far gone and had to be put down

Good luck with him

If it is KS, I can give you the details of a friends horse who went through the op and is now, a year on, after a huge recovery programme, back in full work and competing BD. I hope everything works out for your horse.

my horse sometimes drops to the floor when his girth is done up to tight to quickly, i have to do it up gradually and slowly. he hasnt done it in a long time now.

Twinkletoes, I'll take you up on that offer if that's OK and if the diagnosis is KS, thanks!

Miss Buffay, have you had your horse checked out or is it just one of those things?

The more I read about KS the more I am convinced that is what it is, it certainly explains a lot. He's not explosive or dangerous so he can;t be in that much pain at the moment, but he does ride above the bit with reluctance to come down sometimes, he can be a bit nappy, he's certainly unbalanced in canter and struggles to go off on the right leg, especially on one rein. And the biggest one that struck me was jumping- he jumps fine (in fact he doesn't even look at jumps) but after he's jumped his flatwork improved dramatically- I read on one site that this can happen as during the jump the spine stretches and so the kissing veterbrae separate ever so slightly, alleviating some of the pressure.

I'm trying to stay positive and focus on the positive things I've read. Plus my vet (who is doom and gloom) is optimisitic which has to be a good sign!

Thanks for your replies and I'll keep you posted......

just one of those things, he has only properly collapsed once and got back up when the girth was undone. he has stretched down to the floor a couple of times and doesnt get back up until his girth is undone but he hasnt done it in ages now his girth is done up slowly, he has his back done regularly as he is cold backed and they dont seemed to be to worried
