hi all :)
for those that can remember my horse injured his superficial flexor tendon on 6th june :( and i was asking what refunds i could get back from BE

well i lost the money for hexham with just 6 days notice i didn't expect to get anything back anyway :( the sec for skipton was lovely and refunded me straight away
the sec for cumwhinton told me i had no chance ,but 2 weeks later the money was put back into my account :) thank you cummwhinton

as i'd already done 2 events i only got a measly £26 back from BE for his season ticket
it cost me £10 for the vet to wright the letter :(

after waying up all the options it was decided that stem cell treatment was the best action to tackle the tendon so off we went on a 2.1/2 hour trip to horspital for the bone marrow taken to grow the cells
to cut a long story a little shorter he had them injected back in 4 weeks ago and the leg is looking ok so fingers crossed it has been a success as he gets his next scan on tues to see how its doing :)
he is coping with the box rest now but has been a nightmare ,rearing and landing on my leg and double barreling me in the stable at one point :( he is now on v-calm witch is taking the edge off because the vet just said if he's dangerous just get on him instead of leading him in hand
i did don the BP and draw reins last week and get on for a little hack :D
when they injected them back in i got a strict program to bring him back into work ,i will put this at the bottom if anyone is bored enough to read it ;) it is a bit  its proving to be very hard work pandering to his every need and bringing on the project but it will be worth it if he comes right and the thought of a lovely new dressage saddle when i sell the welshy is keeping me going :D

one of my fav pics of him

and a recent one of both the boys

the welshy :)
well he was much greener than i first thought and he was worrying because i was pushing him to quickly :o so back to the very beginning he went and i did lots of ground work with him and he is now much more relaxed and confident ,i think he had been dragged out of a field backed and hacked out by novice riders and that is all

so he has spent the last 2 month getting used to boots ,hose pipe , clippers ,mounting block, lorry etc etc
he is now a little straighter in walk and trot and were now trying to tune in the canter buttons ,i took him xc schooling at the weekend and trotted over some little jumps and we had great fun ,so took him to a very small clear round today and trotted round there ,he is very honest and tries his best but is still wobbly coming in but he def thinks jumping is fun :D
so the plan now is to carry on improving the flat work and get him out to do some dressage and hopfuly some HT if i can get him fit enough and bring him on as much as i can so he can get the best home possible as he is just lovely and after being past about he deserves someone who can be his best friend

a spanner has been thrown in the works and i have been offered a nice little ex race horse on loan who will prob event next year so have more decision making to do as i can no way have 3 , but i don't want to sell welshy till he's near perfect and i'm having so much fun on him :( but i want to event next year aaarrrggh what to do

a repeat pic of him because i haven't any new ones yet

i will need to contact them as i'm unsure if all the trotting needs to be done in one go or 2mins walk -3mins trot etc with walk breaks in between
and what on earth am i going to do when it snows :( i feel like ive been given an impossble task when i look at all that and poor C will have been on box rest 8 months in total

anyone feel this is a bit much ? (i mean the 35mins trotting & only 10mins walk )

if you got this far without falling asleep you deserve a great big trophy ,sorry its so long thought some may be interested in whats involved in the rehab of a tendon injury
jaffa cakes anyone ?

he is truely stunning and bet you cant wait to be back on the road soon :) when I rehabbed my horse - I had to gradually increase the length so it was initially - a long side of the school say 5 times in a session building up the repetition and then when I didnt fear for my safety :D we had a set route that we hacked out on so it would be trot between two lamposts then to the next one etc etc. I would say if you can dont repeat the same route as it can lead to nappy *ahem* issues :D

A lot of hard work ahead for you:eek:
It does seem strange to me that from week 13 to week 32 there is no increase in time of exercise still 45mins total and just 10 mins walking 35 mins trot does not really allow for much warm up or cool down time, mine usually have 10 mins chilling on a long rein after work and at least 5 mins before they start trotting at the beginning.
Is all the work in an arena or can you get out at all,he may become really bored.
He does look lovely and I am sure it will be worth it.

What a stunning horse. So sorry that he's had to go through the rehab but he'll be well worth it. Really hope he comes sound and happy :)

thank you :D

tomanyh :
thank you ,i'm very lucky as i have a small route off road where we can walk/hack but unfortunatly we do have to turn around half way until we reach about 35mins (long enough to do a loop) he can rear/whip around and its just not worth the risk on the road :(
i wouldn't dare go in the school its far too boingy in there :)

I would PM colouredfan as she has gone through this with her horse.

No advice really but wow what a programme. I think 2 weeks of box rest is bad enough.

i can't take him in an arena its got to be on a firm surface, yes thats what i thought about warming up etc and i wouldn't normally do that much trotting with him it just seems a lot to me :(

quadro
thank you there is something about the second pic i love i'm thinking of getting it put on canvass :)

thank you i will do ,i'm worn out constantly mucking out and running to his time table as if i'm more than a min late either morning or night there is a rodeo display awaiting me :(

I would find it impossible to trot round here for that long,we have some great hills for fitness work but if you go up you have to come back down:eek:

 we don't really have any hills round here but we were snowed in most of last winter :( plenty of places to trot around here atm the problem is going to be when it gets really wet or icy, its just not going to be possible and i don't usually trot on the road because his legs can get puffy
we are 15 mins (in box) from the beach so that is an option but i simply will not be able to afford the cost of fuel everyday :(

Where abouts are you? My horse came back into work earlier this year after injury and box rest and I sent him away for rehab on hydro treadmill. He went 3 times, (twice for 4 days and the last time for 10days) so that he could be worked without a rider. The difference was amazing, he was so much stronger after the 3rd time and therefore it was easier to start the ridden rehab work.

hi i'm in northumberland so prob too far away for anything as useful as that :(

The 10mins walking means it has to be on a hard surface to warm the tendons up to the work. You can spend as long as you like walking on a surface to warm up and cool down. With the racehorses we tend to just keep the walking - we have the luxury of horse walkers though. They don't get the trot work they just keep walking until they are kicked out in the field for a few months. The difference with this is that when our horses do their tendons it's usually half way through or towards the end of their season so there is no point in bringing them back into full work for 9months from initial injury.

Good luck with him and even with stem cell, if you can at least keep walking through the snow then you will doing far more for his legs than doing either nothing or slipping trying to trot him.

Some great pics. :D
Glad he is on road to recovery.
That is a serious rehab programme! I did nothing as rigid with my horse that did a tendon. He did have full year off though.

thank you ,isn't it  i nearly died when i seen that ,they had told me 3 months box rest then chuck him in the field and forget about him for a year so i was a bit shocked
he is worth all the work though :)

Lovely photo of the pair of them :) and it's interesting to see your plan for his rehab as mine did something very similar at the beginning of the year but we are going for the full year of walking. Fortunately though she has been so chilled that she's turned out in an arena sized paddock and hasn't dared trot yet despite two months box rest  strange pony!

I am in Yorkshire so not that far from you, let me know if you want details. My went through on my ins claim, all I had to pay was 50% of the livery charge

Hi, I really sympathise with you as I've been (and am still going!) through the same thing. My horse had 80% damage to her sdft last August through concussion/ running on the hard ground (7yr old eventer).

I was lucky and my vet didn't advise box rest (extremely experienced and also rides at 4* level), he said it wasn't recommended these days for the injury (each to their own I suppose!). She continued to go out in a tiny paddock the size of a couple of stables and I was to ride her everyday. First couple of weeks we did 20 mins walking a day, next couple increase it to 30 mins. She was scanned every 4 weeks so he would assess the injury and give me a plan month by month. He said we should be competing again in a year.

Her work was gradually increased, month 2 was spent doing 5 mins trot a day in the arena, all the time with her being turned out daily to keep her sane. Trot increased up to 10 mins over the month. Next month was the same but the following month it hadn't improved as he would like it so we dropped back down to 5 mins a day again. It's all about pushing it to the limit without breaking it again, you have to keep the elasticity in the tendon in order for it to heal effectively and for you to know that when you start proper work, it has kept its elasticity and it won't go again.

Basically, by xmas we were back up to normal school work (40 mins schooling session inc normal amount of canter) but I did a very silly thing and put her back out with her mates in her big field before it was advised and she re-did the injury in the deep mud. Something I know was totally my fault and I'm still upset now that it happened. She was scanned again and we were back to square one and I was gutted :-( Luckily, an old horse at our yard had a bit of a tweak so, as he needed rest too, they started to go out together in a small paddock which she loved, finally having company.

So... we started again with the work, obviously any hopes of eventing this year were dashed because I was an idiot! Touch wood though we're finally getting there- we're back up to normal school work and also we're jumping once a wekk- only x poles at the moment and only allowed to jump it 6 times in our session but it's fantastic to be leaving the ground after all this time!

She's being scanned again at the end of this month (insurance has now run out so I'm paying for it, not doing it every 4 weeks now though!) and we're hoping that she can jump a bit more. Plan is that she'll be SJ'ing over the winter and will be OK to event again in the Spring.

The plan you have for your horse looks good but remember, things go wrong and it might not all go to plan. If you feel ANY heat/ swelling, be careful and speak to the vet.

Sorry this has turned out so long! Good luck!

Oh, forgot to mention, she had 2 courses of Cartophen injections, and Hyanate. She's also had laser/ ultrasound therapy on it every week and is on Seraquin supplement.

I finally feel like I have my horse back, nearly! :-)

wish i could get mine to walk about the field ,he would def do a few handstands
hope yours comes right

oh :( that must have been gutting to get that far then to be back at the start ,don't beat yourself up about it though i know how hard it is ,i very nearly just put him in the field and let him take his chance as he was getting really distressed in his box and i felt really cruel making him stay in :(

i have him in a routine now and mine goes "out" into the field shelter through the day so he can scratch with his friends and he is much happier and were coping although it has been made difficult because an old retired "ahem" lady ( can think of things i'd rather call her ;) ) is there every morning at 7.30am to put hers out and back at 4.30pm to fetch in and there is no way she will change her routine :(
hence mine starts box walking (winding himself up) at 7.30 and the later i am the more distressed he gets ,same thing happens at 4.30 :( so i have no life and feel like going and poring super glue in said old dears locks so i can have a lie in :( just one lie in would be heaven or even to be able to go out for the day without clock watching :(

very best of luck with yours ,really hope the scan is good news and its still going in the right direction

what is seraquin suplement ? is it to help repair tissue/tendon damage as it might be worth me getting him some

Yes, it's direct from the vets, not sure if you can buy it in shops but I've never seen it. My vet is keen for my horse to still be on it as he thinks it's great stuff. It's expensive but luckily all mine has been paid for by insurance (buy 4 pots, get the 5th free!).

She's now on a half dose which is fine for maintenance so doesn't work out that much more than normal supps, Superflex/ Cortaflex etc.

Mine had stem cell treatment and finallly did his first ODE in June this year after injuring himself in August 09! I took it extra slow just to be sure, I have pm'd you more info on his programme as mine was slower. He was also sane enought to be put in a grass pen twice a day while i mucked out and watched him, its really improtant they dont go tearing around in the first few months. Let me know how the scan goes :-)

Mine is back at Novice level BE now and fingers crossed all is well
