Hi folks,

another update and this time even more positive! (for those who don't recall, this is the cheeky welsh D who was playing up for my daughter).

Since back then (maybe about 2 months ago), we decided to put a lot more work in - riding 6 days out of 7 every week. I ride her sometimes, but this is less necessary now as her behaviour for my daughter is almost impeccable. We're also giving her a lot of variety and plenty hacking so she doesn't get sour in the school. She is so much better on the ground too - picks up her "sticky" hoof straight away for L, stands still to be mounted. I can't tell you how happy we all are, it's a definite case of you get what you put in with this pony! She really does thrive on praise as well.

And they went to their very first show :D Laura came joint 6th place in the 45cm (last really, but she was delighted with her rosette!) and Becky only refused two jumps. Laura didn't realise she had to go over both jumps in the double after the refusal, oops. They let her off (it was a very laid back fund raiser gymkhana). She also tried the 55cm but more refusals there - for the simple reason that Becky had spotted her best friend on the other side of the fence. We all travelled separately because we know this is an issue, but we couldn't avoid each other completely. We will have to figure this one out with time as they are likely to be at most of the same shows.

For now a picture or two of them at the show and a video (of course riding isn't perfect but am super happy with them for the first time).

Meanwhile I'm now having issues with my boy - will ask about that elsewhere though :/

thanks so much everyone :D She has been waiting 4 years for her first show so my heart was in my mouth but they did great!

Nice to see her looking so happy!

Can I warn you that all your albums are public?

oops, thanks Ladyinred. I thought I'd only changed this one to public (so you could all see it). Will investigate tonight as I have a day long workshop to deliver today.

Serious respect to your daughter for riding so confidently - and on a Welsh D who is much bigger than her!

I thought she handled the refusal and retake so well.

Well done, if she manages the pony at a show in a b****y great field there will be no stopping her now! Give both of yourselves a big pat on the back.

That was my first thought! She looked great and perfectly in control - well done to all of you!!

Ps with the plank at that height your daughter could ask the pony to just step over rather than turn away so quickly after the refusal just so pony doesn't start getting into habit. I must admit when my daughter was tiny on a 13.2 (albeit the steadiest pony ever!) we did walk round parts of some courses even to 18 inches high because the pony had a swervey refusal and it taught him (and her) that he went over jump not round just because he didn't fancy it or stopped. Doesn't ibviously work with bigger jumps!

Try 101 exercises for jumping, you can 18 inch fences but keep going forward.
He looks a strong type, well done for keeping him busy.
