Just a quick update to let you know what I found out about the horse who died. Pretty much no new information; horse showed colic signs, owner called out vet who gave a sedative and said horse did not have colic. Vet said to give horse some hay to see if she was interested in it; horse started eating some hay. Horse was quiet for half an hour and then starting getting upset again. Vet came back out and still said not colic; gave horse strong sedative and shot of painkiller. Horse was quiet for a couple of hours and then it all started up again. Vet came out a third time said it was twisted gut; horse was put to sleep.

No it wasn't one of my boarders horses - the mare belonged to a friend of mine. Nice little mare too.

Yes in a case of serious colic or twisted gut, 4 hours would possibly be too long; however there is no way I would use any of the vets around here I'm afraid. In an absolute emergency I do have a very good friend who is a great equine vet and he is about 2 hours away from me so if this had been my horse, I'd either have called in a special favour from him, or the horse would have to be shot or would have to take it's chances. I'm fairly well stocked up with vet stuff here though, unlike my friend (owner of the mare who died) who doesn't know how to give an injection unfortunately.

The timeframe of the horse becoming ill to it's death was from 4pm till midnight therefore in this case the proper vet could possibly have made a difference - but then another vet was then dealing with it so couldn't call him.
