Further to my recent post about fresh horse, too much feed and not enough turnout, things seem to be getting slightly better. Re. turnout, usually its only one hour a day, then whatever exercise I can fit in (can be hard with two small kids at school only 4 days a week). Anyway Xmas hols fast approaching and concerned about not being able to find the time to ride (mum won't babysit!!!). Will take the girls with me a couple of times and lunge him, but this will not be enough. Anyway, I ask if I could sometimes pop back down during the afternoon once all the horses had had their turnout and stick mine back in the paddock for the afternoon. She said sure no probs, but did I know she has another field (about 3 mins walk away) that I can put him in for the whole day as no one else bothers to use it. Well of course, NO I did not know. But now I do I will be using it!!!! So will at least be able to pop down to stables and walk him with kids to field and leave him there for the day. Hopefully then in two weeks when I ride again he won't be as fresh. Hooray.

Sounds like things are going in the right direction for you :-)

Does anyone else on the yard have kids too, so you could take turns babysitting while the other person rides?

I haven't read your other post, but is it an option to pay for the yard staff to school your horse the day the kids are not in school, or alternatively to get a sharer who can ride say twice a week, to give you a breather :-)

oh and perhaps give santa a hint that it would be nice with some some "mum/[insert suitable relative here] will baby sit 3 hrs for free vouchers" for Christmas?

Usually I get one of the teenagers to ride or lunge him, but with him being fresh I am not sure about it (although they are all better riders than me and higher levels!!) I may ask them to, but only if the YO is there at the same time, ie. not when there is no one else at the yard. I will then also ask the YO to school him once or twice. On top of that if he can go out in the field on the days no one can do anything with him, it should all be ok for me to jump back on when kids back at school!!!! Saying that he was good as gold today (had crazy lungeing session yesterday, galloped like crazed lunatic all kicking and snorting for 10 mins and was impossible to stop) and I still fell off!!!! Very bruised bottom as arena was not as soft as usual!!!!

Oh and good idea about santa!!!

check your insurance or make sure they have their own - to my great surprise I found that someone riding my horse was not covered under my own insurance..
