Ok, so some of you will remember me posting about my mare who has recently had colic surgery. Since then she has had some kind of reaction, probably to some of the chemicals used during the surgery. We are now 3 months post surgery and I want to post some pictures of the affected areas.

She has been seen by the vet a number of times for this and has had 5, yes I mean 5 courses of antibiotics and various creams etc. What i'm interested in is whether people think the hair will grow back fully. The vets are doubtful, however they said that as the skin was very badly damaged any that did grow back would be white, and as you can see from the pics, this is not the case!

Some areas that are not pictured were affected but not as badly and the smaller area pictured for comparison has grown back completely.

The reason I am fretting is that the large patches next to eachother are right where the back of the saddle would rest. Do I give up now and accept that she may just be a field ornament now?

First of all Large patch approx 4 weeks after surgery, most skin healed.

Small patch on rump at approx same time! For comparison

Then large patch approx 2 weeks ago.

Then large patch the other day.

It just seems to be taking so long when the other patch grew back so quickly. Also there are some areas that have had tiny bits of stubble (you cant see on pics) for ages now and stubble doesn't seem to be growing at all. Vets have said nothing we can do now apart from hope!

Thanks for any advice/opinions.

Sausage casserole is in the pot for anyone who cares to help!

What are you putting on it at the minute??

I have heard good things about megatex products but I use cornucresince hoof ointment for bald patches, has always worked a treat for helping hair grow back for all my horses :)

I'd hope that it grows back cause she looks funny with her little bald patches but if you want one of those funny wig things you know where Briggy is to borrow his gingerness :)

In all seriousness Tam I do hope it all grows back so you can carry on with her education and everything

xx

Ha ha, thanks Anna, Will briggy have enough to spare over winter to make a wig? How about if we clip the same size patch out of him to cover her bit??

A wee bit of cornucrescine is great, I used it on mine when he fell in the school and gave himself a baldy shoulder and hip. Might be worth asking your vet what they think about you using it, maybe even just every other day or something?

Ok, will ask vet about cornucrescine. Others have said wondergel, but i've not heard of it? Has anyone used this and had any success etc?

Yeahh Briggy has enough hair to last Flicka a while :) take it from his legs if you want an exact colour match but if your not too worried take it from anywhere :) the winter coat is almost here
