Those who know the story ,miss this paragraph out. For others,my horse was shod, 3 days later lost one shoe and twisted the other in field.We removed the twisted shoe,our farrier was away and couldn't come out for 4 days, he put the shoes back on 12 days ago, in the afternoon we went to box him up to go for a xc lesson and noticed he was lame.Farrier came back and removed a nail which he thought was causing the problem. He got worse over the next 2 days and the farrier was away again so we called the vet. She removed the shoe but didn't want to cut the sole so just said poultice every 12 hours and tub in epsom salts.We did this but he was getting worse so last SaturdayI phoned the vet again and farrier. Vet said keep poulticing, Farrier said I was worrying too much and to stop tubbing and leave poultice on for 48 hours and basically I was doing too much [ I put the phone down] On Monday [after he came to my daughters wedding on Sunday] he came out opened the foot, put on a dry poultice and said leave it for 48 hours then on Wednesday take it off and leave it open to harden, DO NOT LET HIM OUT OF HIS STABLE. I did take the dressing off WEd. but recovered it because I was scared of poo getting in large hole in foot and thought I would take it off before he arrived on Friday [ today].
He was still very lame on Wed. but was a lot better yesterday and today seemed quite good .The farrier text last night to say he was going to leave it until Monday so today I redressed it and put on an equiboot an turned him out in a small dry paddock and sat watching him in case the boot came off...................Guess what .........The farrier arrived.
I didn't know what to do. I just caught him and said 'I thought you were coming on Monday so I thought it would be ok to let him out.'
He was furious and said 'I've caught you now, I told you to keep him in'
I didn't know what to say.
Anyway ,he took the boot and dressing off, not sure if he realised I had kept it cover. He plugged the hole with cotton wool and put on a pad and a shoe.We now have to ride in the school, not the road ,and slowly increase work. I would say he is 90% sound but he is entered for the BE intro champ next Saturday. The farrier says he will be ok by then but we can't jump or gallop before the comp.
