Update on Foot sore Shetland

Hi all, hope you've all had a fab Christmas!

Just thought Id put an update on as a few of you were kind enough to respond to my question regarding footsore Shetland.

He has abscesses in both front feet, poulticed overnight last night and was greeted by yukky poultices this morning. Ive never been so happy to see pus :) Pony is on 1/2 a bute a day for 4 days and is in his stable ( along with everyone else on the yard as weather is horrible) He is ALOT happier as am I :)

Glsd youve got to the bottom of it :)

I'm not sure of its true but I read somewhere that Bute can affect the course of the abcess and sometime best not used, I'm sure someone more experienced will come along and correct me but worth keeping in mind :)

i think it depends on the amount of pain the horse is in. when mine had an abcess she was sweating and grunting and was holding her leg up so the vet gave bute as she was obviously in so much pain. she didnt give antibiotics because that would affect the course of the abcess...
 
Bless him! I have one question .. Where did you find that rug?! Have been looking for one in Newmarket colours in a 4ft9 for ages and id imagine he's a similar size? (unless he's teeny?)
 
I hate to put a damper on this, and I'm glad the pony is better, but it is exceptionally unusual for two abscesses to burst at exactly the same time in both front feet unless there is a laminitic response going on which has killed the laminae and caused the abscesses.

I'm really sorry to say that I think you have found the primary symptom, not the cause, of his problem.

The pus is coming out from his frog/bars/Heels ( so back of the foot) he is much more comfortable on his feet, is moving around his stable more and generally seems a lot happier. I will continue with poulticing, soaking his hay and giving him his bute for the next few days and if there is no improvement I will get him tested for Cushings. Thanks for taking the time to reply :)
