I'm back from the yard

Frankie owner, C , was there

and when the physio came she asked me lots of the usual questions, including what do I do with him and what are my plans, for which I said jumping

She did the usual physio stuff, I walked him out for her and she noticed that his off hind wasn't tracking up and his near hind was over tracking. So tied him up and she did a lot of prodding (don't know the physio term

) and she said he was fine over his shoulders, nice and loose over his hindquarters (of course still needs more muscle
smirk.gif
) but the main area of tightness was where his saddle went. She did this three finger thing along the muscle that runs parallel to his spine and you could see the tension poor thing! his muscles kept dipping away but the more she did it the less he did it. He just stood there eating his hay so it hardly bothered him

apart from when she did a bit in his right side where he objected slightly

and to me that shows why he is so bad on his right rein?

Anywhoo after all that I walked him out for her again, and she said he looked tonnes better

she showed me this trick to do with a hoof pick, running it down his bum (I can't explain it but it makes him round his back) and I could do that every day. She also said that she has no problem with me doing what I want to do with him, but of course keep an eye on it and let her know if anything comes up. I have her number now so that's all good!!

When she left C was like 'you feel better now don't you?' as if to say 'I told you so'

I said of course, and it's always good for for me to know of things to do to help him in anyway I can, and that with all the work I do with him I just wanted reassurance that I am not making him any worse, and end up breaking him completely in 6 months to a year

C then said ' I said it was all about his feet/bad shoeing' and all I could say was 'yes, yes'

So she wasn't mad with me, just a bit

i don't think she will though

So that was an expensive 'piece of mind' for me, but I do feel a lot better

Sorry for the essay

Surely she must see that it's for the good of the horse that you have done it. I would be pleased if I was the owner that you were conscientious enough to get him checked over.
Well done you

thanks

i know I should have asked first but she would have kept saying no

I'm not saying I'm the best carer, and know it all, but I'm not ignorant enough just to rely on one opinion when I have an 'inkling' that something isn't quite right

hey ho I expect this won't be the last time lol *rolls eyes*

hey, glad you got it sorted and the owner was ok. One thing id say tho is id now be looking that his saddle fitted correctly as they wouldnt get sore under that area for no reason......

Also sorry im surprised the women told you to do certain things yourself, the pen down the bum thing, i dont think its somthing you could do without really knowing what your doing - could cause more worse then good. My back lady has never once told me do anything other then carrot streches...sorry..

NIce that he has been checked, but in fact all you have done (from the owner's point of view) is prove that there was very little wrong with him apart from some sore muscles, so I don't see this changing her outlook or methods of dealing with problems

i did say to her that if i tried it would i do more harm then good, as i've heard someone else say that before. she said that that was along the same lines as carrot stretches and a 'belly lift', which i do every time i ride anyway, and that it would be ok. I get what you are saying though because although i was watching what she was doing I really wouldn't want to touch him in that way for the fear of doing more harm that good!

he has a wintec cair saddle, and the gullet was changed to a narrower one in December. (he was in a much wider one which was totally wrong) so perhaps he needs to go up a colour?

no you're right the watcher but what else can i do??

* i know the answer to this one methinks *

stop seeing him I spose, if i don't like the way she treats him

I don't think it's a problem. My physio showed me how to do this on my old horse and it has really helped him. All you are doing is running your hands (or a pen or hoof pick) along the top and down the back of his quarters - it's definitely no worse than carrot stretches and actually probably safer because I always find with carrot stretches that they try to do too much. So I wouldn't worry at all about doing any harm.

she showed me the correct way to do it, and how if he dips his back then it is in the wrong place and you need to find the spot where he rounds his back then it is in the correct place and then she just ran the hoof pick down his bum muscle. He looked like he was going to jump forward but I think he quite liked it actually

and his back rounded nicely without him moving anywhere
