Update on Henry-the vet's been

The vet's just left and Henry has an abscess. He was really good and only snatched his foot away once, I was so proud of him, especially being a bit of a nervy horse still.

The vet thinks it's an old one not healed for whatever reason, as when he was parring (is that the right word?) amongst the white was lots of old, black matter.

He's now got an enormous hole in his sole, a massice poultice and bright red vetwrap, which he was a little terrified of, and was really over-exagerating his movement in it, while rolling his eyes and snorting!! I've stuck some black over the top for the poor old fool, which seems to have placated him a little! He's loads better already from the pressure being relieved, and hopefully his painkillers should kick in soon.

My vet, bless him, not only left his home early, and stopped in at mine on his way, he's also not charged me for anything but the bute! Bless him!

That's one worry out of the way anyway, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

I've just read your other thread about your friend & all I can say is Henry is a lucky boy to have you & it sounds like your friend has a major chip on her shoulder about something! At least it doesn't seem like your vet thinks you're fussing unnecessarily & I'm sure Henry isn't complaining. If I were you I'd carry on "wasting" my time & money, the laugh will be on her when your "no good" horse is healthy, happy & has a wonderful relationship with you.

As for your friend.... all I can do is echo what everyone else has said. Sounds like she's just jealous that she can't afford to buy lots of nice stuff for her own horse.

Good news that it's an abscess. I have read your other post and think Henry is a seriously lucky boy. I think you are far too nice in that you still refer to this other person as a "friend", ex-friend would be more like it.
You are obviously giving Henry the best possible care and he will repay your kindness a hundredfold.
I was given a huge horse (the bay in my signature) and he has had a lot of foot problems, but I've had him for 8 years now and have enjoyed every day. Good luck with Henry.

Glad it's worked out so simply. Abscesses seem quite common in horses recovering from illness, poor feeding etc. Presumably the less healthy horn grows out just as the horse also becomes more active and changes in feed, footing etc. need adaptation. Also since the feet are systemic he would likely have some "left over" issues. Ironic that so many things like this show up as the horse is actually improving - it can make it seem like one thing after another for a bit!

As to your friend . . . eh, who needs friends like that. Don't worry about it. You're doing your best job for a horse that deserves it. Apparently your vet doesn't think you're alarmist and over dependent - the fact that he's giving you "discounts" pretty much shows that - and I'd take his opinion over anyone else's.

And on the subject of buying him things, well, he's yours to spoil as you wish, isn't he? If you want him to have nice stuff and you can afford it, why not? The purpose of having a horse is to enjoy it so if it's making you happy and helping him, there is no problem.
Hope the abscess clears up soon.

That is good news and what a nice vet you have.
Just being reading your other post, as for your friend, well not sure I would call her a friend, more like a green eyed monster, don't take any notice, you spend YOUR money on whatever you like and I think your horse is a very lucky boy. Good luck...

Glad to hear your horse is doing ok. An abcess isn't the end of the world. A tip for poulticing is to use baby's nappies - yes really. They are the right kind of shape to fit over the hoof. You can get fairly cheap ones (supemarket own brand).

I too have read your other post - if I were you I would go to her and say "I have heard the comments you are making about me and Henry behind my back and I don't appreciate them. I am doing what I consider the best for my horse and if I have the funds then I will buy what I want in the way of rugs etc. It really isn't any of your business and if you are a horse lover then you should be glad that i have saved Henry. Please keep your negative opinions to yourself."

You don't have to be 'angry' but just state the facts. It really isn't any of her business what you spend or how you spend it. I suspect she is jealous?

Glad it was nothing serious. Sounds like you have a good relationship with your vet and as you get to know each other better he will probably be able to talk to you on the phone about minor problems so you will not need to call him out so much. You will also get more confident in your own stable management skills, in the meantime better to get the vet out too often than not ofter enough.

Re other stuff carry on enjoying your horse and his accessories

My horses have to do a job, and their rugs are fairly tatty hand me downs as I spend all my money on training and competoition entries, but that is my choice, just as it is yours to buy new rugs (I would do both if I could

)

You carry on enjoying spoiling your horse. As you say, its your money and none of anyone else's business what you do with it. Henry is a lucky boy - my horse wants to know if he can come and live with you too

Sounds to me like you are just being sensible with a horse that has had problems (haven't read all his history, should be on way to work

Glad Henry is ok. It sounds like your 'friend' isnt as good a friend as she might be it sounds so much like jealousy and anyway when it comes to calling the vet out they would rather deal with something which is developing into a problem than be called late when the problem is 10 times worse.
