UPDATE on horse collapsing whilst being tacked up

Hi

I did e mail you. Your horse has nerve and muscle damage. Just a change of saddle won't help. He needs to see a osteopath.

Heather, I did get your email but have not had chance to respond, sorry (don't get online at weekends and been busy in work). have showed your email to my vet and she agrees that we should try physio/ chiro etc before we go down the invasive routes of injecting his facet joints. Will keep you updated......

I had a horse who would either collapse or rear whilst being tacked up. He had a dent in his ribcage and didn't even like rugs/rollers being put on. He was very nervy and I never did get to the bottom of it. He often became disunited in canter. He was hopeless in winter but I tried re breaking him the following spring with a new (fitted) saddle when sometimes he could be tacked up if kept walking. The whole thing was rather dangerous looking back. Even on the lunge he would take off as if there was a lion on his back when tacked up. I ended up riding so rarely. I did have the back lady and the vet who suggested going down the bute road. Unfortunately before that started I was dumped and broke ribs and got concussion. I had to cut my losses and sold him cheaply to a dealer who i was confident would know what to do. I explained the problem to her. I know I had a responsibility to the horse but I could not afford to resolve it and his whole attitude was really rather frightening/dangerous. He seemed ok when I tried him (buted up?)but not quite right once I got him home. I tried getting information from the dealer and the previous owner but neither were really honest with me so i kept trying thnking it must be me being overawed by a bolshy horse - or the problem had escalated on the journey from the dealers yard to mine. I hope you find a resolution to this. If Ronan begins to get dangerous be very careful, as my instructor said you pay out the same for a good or bad horse . Have you had him long?

daftasabrush- I've had Ronan about 5 months but the lady who shares him with me had him on loan for about 18 months before that she we know his history for the past 2 years or so. He doesn't have any problems on the lunge, in fact he's great on the lunge, and although he pulls faces when he's having stuff put on his back he doesn't go mad. he's actually a lot better with a different saddle, there's still a niggle there, but will be speaking to my vet today about next steps

I'm glad you have some history and have had him for a little while before this began, it does look more hopeful for you. I have looked at the video and Ronan does look less panicky than my guy did. I'm no vet but my research originally indictaed that it may be a fainting type response(Vaso Vagal Syncope) , either to a (remembered) pain stimulus or constriction of a major blood vessel or nerve - Which seemed more likely with mine owing to the dented ribcage. I do hope you get to the bottom of it, you seem very sensible and positive and I am sure you will. Best of luck for a long future together!
