Update on Horse I tried today

Well this evening I went and tried the nicest little 5 yo TB mare I have ever sat on.

She was as described but unfortunatly not for me.

We arrived too early and got to go out and help catch her. She was a pussycat but untacked was a lot finer than I had anticipated my fault I am used to CB and Irish bone.

She was a small 16.1 very light on her feet and the lightest mouth I have come across it was like carrying butterflies in your hand but I felt like there was no horse in front of me. I really need a full up 16.2 with a bit of substance I think. Her owner jumped her but I did not as after some walk and trot work I knew I would not be buying her and not having jumped recently I did not want to upset her.

So if you are looking for a TB 5 yo with the manners of a lady and calm cool and collected she is the horse to go and try. I really really wish she had been right but she wasnt.

Very good experience and a lovely genuine owner.

Now I have tried a fw memories have come flooding back to me of how many I tried before Gulliver I think it was 5 one of which failed a vetting. I am just glad to find that I wont buy something unsuitable oh and that I am very fussy!!

Cerainly some gorgeous horses on that link. I will always have a very soft spot for ID's and ID x TB's. Tomorrow I am gong to look at 2 hanoverian fillies - both related to my current mare - so very excited!

Don't worry artyanne - the perfect horse for you will come alongn soon and be worth the wait.

My horse who I've just sold was an IDx. An ID or ISH is definately what I'm going to go for when I'm ready to buy next.

Second baby on it's way so finances just won't allow it for about 3 years (childcare costs)

I must admit I am still yearning for a nice CB.
It makes me realise that size is important this mare was 16.1 but felt like 15.2. Its funny my first horse was 15.2 and I seem to step up a few inches with each horse. I had been ignoring 16.3 but maybe the right 16.3 would be my size ?

If you are looking at young horses 4/5 don't go mad on height. My boy is fullup 16.2 with possibly another inch to go, but he has still not got much in front of you and is quite narrow, this will change they fill out from 6-10. He currently rides no bigger than a rather chunky 14.2 driving pony I ride, but then she has a fab shoulder from all the driving!

But anyway the point being most young horses ride much smaller than their height and will fill out a lot as they mature and develop muscle.

I totally agree with you and I did try to view this mare as where will she be in 3 years time. Untacked my feeling was that her neck was set below her withers and yes she had no top line at her age but I did not feel she had the basic framework to fill out where I wanted it but the final straw was that she did not have much bone. It is not that obvious from the photos but she had a very fine leg and there is nothing wrong with that at all but not for me. I have seen thorougbreds with more bone I owned one.

This is being a really good education for me I know I have to go and look at far more horses and my other challenge is I am not used to driving any distance on the motorway so aneducation allround as if I want the 'perfect horse' I have to find it it wwont find me. Ho hum the Olympic stressage 3de should be on this pm.
