Rather a delayed update due to having a very up and down summer with him, one step forward then one back with possibly a not great outcome as he was still lame and each time he seemed to improve and the work was increased, under vets instructions, he got worse now finally that seems to be resolved and it looks as if he may have a useful future, although there are still several issues that are as yet causing problems.
He finally started drinking 9 weeks after returning home, having had to totally change his rehab plan he was turned away completely instead of the daily turnout in a restricted area which he would have found so stressful and added to the ongoing problems he was having, so out he went and after a week his facial swellings finally went down and he started to drink normally, such a relief.
He came back into work after a month being turned out and relaxing, the work increased very slowly he was still lame behind in part due to muscle weakness, regular physio and vet checks he improved but each time the work went up he deteriorated, this was not supposed to happen we had been told he should come back to full work fairly quickly but possibly due to the other issues he had the body did not heal as well as it should.
He has now been in work for 6 months, mainly hacking, straight lines, hills etc to build him up, he has recently started schoolwork and a little jumping, which he loves but is now showing a resistance to going forward, out hacking he is fine, not himself in that he is spooky and sharp but happy to go forward, when jumping he is enthusiastic but basic walk trot transitions mean backing off and reluctance to move until he has really warmed up, he used to just get on with work, was never stiff yet now he seems to take ages to loosen up he comes out of his box rather stiff having only been in an hour or so, so more concerns about whether he is fully recovered.
My vet has seen him recently, he is nearly level behind and showing no pain from the leg injury there is full flexion in a straight line but a very slight toe drag only on a circle , physio is very pleased with his progress he has muscled up well and with some school work this should improve further, I thought it was about time I put it on here for HHO to see if there is anything else to suggest, I have my own idea of what may be wrong and the vet agrees it may well be ulcers but this horse has gone through so much I want to avoid any unnecessary tests if possible, so any thoughts welcome.
