Rather a delayed update due to having a very up and down summer with him, one step forward then one back with possibly a not great outcome as he was still lame and each time he seemed to improve and the work was increased, under vets instructions, he got worse now finally that seems to be resolved and it looks as if he may have a useful future, although there are still several issues that are as yet causing problems.

He finally started drinking 9 weeks after returning home, having had to totally change his rehab plan he was turned away completely instead of the daily turnout in a restricted area which he would have found so stressful and added to the ongoing problems he was having, so out he went and after a week his facial swellings finally went down and he started to drink normally, such a relief.

He came back into work after a month being turned out and relaxing, the work increased very slowly he was still lame behind in part due to muscle weakness, regular physio and vet checks he improved but each time the work went up he deteriorated, this was not supposed to happen we had been told he should come back to full work fairly quickly but possibly due to the other issues he had the body did not heal as well as it should.

He has now been in work for 6 months, mainly hacking, straight lines, hills etc to build him up, he has recently started schoolwork and a little jumping, which he loves but is now showing a resistance to going forward, out hacking he is fine, not himself in that he is spooky and sharp but happy to go forward, when jumping he is enthusiastic but basic walk trot transitions mean backing off and reluctance to move until he has really warmed up, he used to just get on with work, was never stiff yet now he seems to take ages to loosen up he comes out of his box rather stiff having only been in an hour or so, so more concerns about whether he is fully recovered.

My vet has seen him recently, he is nearly level behind and showing no pain from the leg injury there is full flexion in a straight line but a very slight toe drag only on a circle , physio is very pleased with his progress he has muscled up well and with some school work this should improve further, I thought it was about time I put it on here for HHO to see if there is anything else to suggest, I have my own idea of what may be wrong and the vet agrees it may well be ulcers but this horse has gone through so much I want to avoid any unnecessary tests if possible, so any thoughts welcome.

Golly, you have both been through the wars. I'm so glad that he's getting better. The not drinking must have been so worrying.

If you both suspect ulcers, why not try gastroguard and see if he improves?

I was going to pm you and ask for an update. Glad something's have improved but seems like an uphill struggle for you and him which is sad.

I had been meaning to give an update but with so many setbacks I had felt it may jinx things even more but it does seem to be getting there at long last, just keeping fingers crossed we can get over this final hurdle and he can have a useful future.

He had GG earlier on and improved, he had started cribbing along with all the other things going on, but was not scoped as the vet, not the one I am now using, said that there was no need. I think we will scope, I just thought it worth doing this thread before I phone him later for a chat about what to do next.
