Update on. I need a kick up the arse!

I fear this will prob get lost in the eather with all the debateing going on about a certain horse handeling method ;) :p :D But I'm going to post an update from yesterdays post anyway and hope any intrested party will be able to find it :D.

I was feeling realy ill last night and had been up all night and the weather is quite nasty today (windy and wet) I was trying to convince myself not to ride Merryn out after yesterday but I knew deep down inside that I HAD to take him out again. I waited for a break in the weather. I got him tacked up and off we set. (He seemed remarcably calm considering the wind :confused: ) I carried on and we got to the stream. Crossed it and got to the place where we had problems yesterday. The little bugger went to do it again :eek: But this time I was ready for him :p He dropped his left shoulder and shook his head so I grabbed the right rein gave him a kick with my left leg and growled "get on" :mad: at him. He gave a loud snort and a little squeal but then he walked on without any rearing :D :D :D We carried on round the ride without to much trouble. :)

But as I rode round I got to thinking about Merryn. Although he is 9 he has done nothing so he is actualy more like a 4 yrold and it must be hard for him as he has only ever had the one owner since he came off the forest. I think his naughtyness is due to the fact that he isn't very confident and he doesn't trust me that much yet after all we've only been rideing out since the newyear realy after all his lameness issues :( When we got back from our ride I gave him a nice brush and he was so sweet. I think alittle more bonding time is in order and hopefuly then there'll be no more problems.

Well done for just getting on with it! Sounds like he is over his hiccup too! I see what you mean about him being more like a 4yo, I'm sure as he gets to know you better as a rider as well as a carer he will be able to trust you more and find more confidence in himself too. Sounds like he is a proper sweetie though!

Thanks guys. He is a real sweetie realy. None of what he did yesterday was nasty I think he was just afraid and unsure. He seems to get worried everytime we go somewhere new. He knows all the rides this side of the stream now so is fairly confident but I think he worries when we cross the stream as we are probably going somewhere new. He'll get there in the end just needs mummy to hold his hands for a while ;) :p :D :D
 
Glad it all went well. I had a hectic day so didn't manage to tackle the tree dwelling, horse eating pigeons today.
 
I think you are very brave to go out again today when you were feeling ill, and the weather was not good - that wind was sending my lot crazy in the field!

Sounds like you have figured him out, and as you say, as your bond grows, he trusts you more, and his own confidence increases, then he will just be easier and happier.

Well done. :D
 
Well done, i knew you'd be fine. Glad you had the confidence to ride him through it, he's probably just nervous so as you said, if he trusts you a bit more he should be fine. We need photos of him, he is cute haha :D

Sprout that wind yesterday was awful atleast it's gone today. Hopefuly the nice weather has returned :D

muddygreymare If only you'd said that on Wed I'd have posted him to you :p ;) :D :D I'll try and get some pics soon. His weight is looking so good now :) He looks like a pony instead of a blob on legs :D
 
I think you do a great job with your horses Laura and also a great relationship with them. Maybe just as Merryn's getting more experience and growing in confidence he will try it on a bit at times but sounds like you're sorting it as you go successfully as he comes across all the things he's not sure about. I didn't ride yesterday as was so gusty here I couldn't face the arguments and today have a headache so will wimp out til later so all credit to you for getting on and going out! I love hearing about how Herbie and Merryn are coming along.
