Quick recap, Millie is an English Bull Terrier x who was living in a small cage with just enough room to turn around and stand up in. She was in this cage 24 hours a day except for 5 or 10 minutes for a quick wee etc. She was very very food aggressive and very nervous.
Well, what a difference 5 days makes! She is living outside in a large kennel and run until our lodger dog goes on Friday. She initially would lunge at the other dogs through the mesh but has now settled and they all wag tails at each other.
She allows us in the sleeping area where her food is if she isn't eating and wags her tail, but still growls if she is eating. Just being within a few inches of her food bowl without her attacking feet/legs is a major acheivement, I am so pleased with her.
She has been going for a walk on the farm on a lead and trots along happily with tail constantly wagging. We decided to be brave and let her off her lead this evening and she was fantastic! Came when we called her 90% of the time, the rest of the time she had her head stuck down a rabbit hole which was obviously far more interesting than us!
Just seeing this little dog who had lived in a small cage for over a year (I think) and who was miserable and aggressive run about off her lead with a big doggy smile on her face and tail constantly wagging is just a joy. I must admit I had tears in my eyes, which she kindly licked for me when I called her back to have her lead on
I still find a dogs ability to love humans when they have caused them so much misery amazing.
If I can ever get Millie to sit still long enough I will get some pictures. She isn't the prettiest looking dog ever but we love her!
