This is a tentative update as I don't want to jinx anything... Therefore no smiley face on the post as it would be tempting fate...

After I posted that Jenny was lying down a lot, she started going downhill. Rolling - looked like 'normal' rolling ie not frantic/spasmodic, but she was doing it a lot. Lying on the arena & looking as if she was trying to make 'snow angels'. She also went off her food which is v unusual - due to the Cushings, her appetite is normally extremely greedy.

I decided I wanted to call it a day because she was looking like Cat did when he was ill, i.e. miserable, but o/h said to give her til the morning. To cut a long story short, we spoke to her usual vet & I've nearly called him out 3 times as I really don't want to force her to carry on longer than we should. Her previous sharer has also been down from Wales to say goodbye to her.

But over the last 2 days, she hasn't rolled or lay down at all & her appetite's come back with a vengeance. Today she ate her breakfast & was kicking the gate for seconds when we got back from jumping.

This is *kind of* good news, but it's also kind of scarey, because we had a 6 month better/worse rollercoaster with Cat & he was actually discharged as 'cured' & put back into work less than 2 weeks before his final relapse.

So I'm pleased that she's back to being herself again, but I don't want to be too

because of what happened with Cat. It was 10x harder losing him cos I was sooooo happy thinking that we'd won, so this time with Jenny I'm not going to go overboard - at the end of the day, she's a 35 yo TBx who's a good 10 years older than nature intended.

Tracey & Jenny x

Absolutely H - U - G - E hugs to both you and Jenny!

Try not to go with the rollercoaster. Take each day she's with you as a bonus.

Thank you so much for updating us on Jenny, it sounds like she is a little fighter and I for one will keep everything crossed for both of you

I have a Cushings horse, however he has not and never had a good appetite, it is a shame it hasn't changed as he is such a finickity (sp) eater

Jenny used to be extremely fussy & would only eat oats, which is the last thing she needed, being a raving lunatic in her younger days. If you tried to make her eat, she'd knock her bucket over on purpose so you couldn't make her!!

But now she seems to be hungry all the time & will kick the gate & neigh for food if she sees anyone on the yard.

Bless.

Maybe she just had a wee pocket of wind!!!

Oldies are so great.

I rode my oldie the other day for the first time in 5 years(he has been doing work) and I had a great time.

Give her a big cuddle from all of us.

Thank you for updating us. I'm so pleased that it looks like you'll have your old girl for a little longer.

The oldie that I have, the one who does the same sort of stuff as Jenny, was taken out for a ride last week and he loved it! Since then, he has looked full of himself and even "appears" younger.

As I said before, mine has been doing this "mild colic" stuff, on and off, for the past couple of years, and I just make sure I keep a close eye on him when he seems a little out of sorts.

I'm happy for you and Jenny.

Thanks for psting this and I fully understand your reluctance to get too excited!

I think these extra-oldies (mine is nearing the bracket as she enters her 29th year) have been on borrowed time for a few years already. Doesn't make losing them any easier but we have to be grateful for the twighlight years many never get.

I see you have braced yourself as I have (though when it comes to the crunch we'll see just how well!) and for now enjoy seeing her in the sun.

This Cushing's malarky is driving me slowly mad, too, but I had to laugh at Eaglestone's remark. Sorry Eaglestone

Keep it up Jenny!

thanks for the update, glad she's shown improvement

I've got a 30 year old gelding too, it's a bugger, this old age business!

Brighteyes .. I have just read another one of your replies about the Metobolic Syndrome and treating them for this will do not harm .... and how right you are

...

Well whilst looking through to respond to it, I found this comment

and I think your term 'Malarky' just sums it all up .... I am on a roller coaster with this condition, but I still take comfort in seeing other Cushings horses and ponies living to a ripe old age, and as I thought my old boy was immortal was in absolute shock when he went down with Cushings Induced Laminitis .... but I take a lot of comfort in these posts that he may make 35 .... and I even told him tonight that he will be with me in 8 years time

I know the feeling - just got Polly over strangles and a nasty secondary infection at 26 to be advised she probably had Cushing's.

Initially I was a bit floored but once I got my head around the problem I got Googling and asked the HHO crew for help and she's doing better than I could have/dared hope.

She'll be 28 in May, so a stripling compared to Jenny. I take my hat off to the people who stand by their oldies. Not all of us can afford the luxury of retiring them, for many reasons and I'll keep going until quality of life becomes an issue.

I hope Jenny has a few summers left in her yet.

Extraordinary for a TB x so they must be doing lots that's right!

Here she is...

She doesn't LOOK TBx any more but she def is - her dad was Shelley's Boy. She looks more Native atm, but when she's clipped out in summer, you can see that she's a lot finer.

Hey Catembi

I was browsing and the name caught my eye. I take it that's Jenny in the pictures? Maybe I will get to see her for real!!! I thought sumink was up when you didn't mention her in your emails. Dint like to say owt tho.

Frankie sends neighs and whinnies.

Sorry, olblueeyes - don't tend to mention her cos she doesn't normally do a lot... She normally eats, sleeps, follows Adrian around the arena when I'm trying to school & sneaks out of the field in search of adventure if she spies that I've left the gate open...

Thanks for letting us know. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you - it's so hard to know when the moment is. Here's hoping it isn't yet and that Jenny enjoys a long hot summer, sun on her back and not too many flies.

Glad she seems to have improved, keeing fingers crossed.
