Hi, not posted an update for a week as been off work and our computer at home playing up and not able to log on ....

Had a busy and quite stressful week! Josie's abscesses were showing no signs of improving with antibiotics, the vets then recommended dorsal wall resections of both front feet to drain them. She had left foot done Wednesday and right foot Thursday, she was so good, no nerve block required just sedative, I think she almost understood we were trying to relieve the pressure!

Although her feet are sore, she is so much brighter in herself, a lot of yucky yellow pus has come out, they are poulticed at the moment being changed by the vet every other day for ten days then can be left open to air. I will try and post some pics of her feet once poultice are off.

Friday she was x-rayed again, she hadnt been x-rayed for 4 weeks, since having the clogs on. We were worried that the pedal bone had gone through her foot or infection in the bone as she had so much extra stress with these abscesses.

X-Rays showed right foot some rotation (same as last time) and left foot still has severe rotation but is the same as last time, so it has at least managed to stabilise with all this other stuff going on.

So although we are not out the woods by any means, nothing worse has happened and hopefully we can get rid of these abscesses this time, she certainly seems happier and lying down less, eating loads and generally in better spirits.

Next plan is my farrier will look at X-Rays, and end of the week trim the feet and re-fit clogs again, then fingers crossed we can try and get her feet stable and with lots of remedial work, make some progress.

I cannot believe the stress and highs and lows with this laminitis! Thankyou everyone who has messaged me and I will keep you all updated xx

Thank you so much for the update, I have been wondering how she is doing ....

And I agree with you about the high and lows of this horrid condition

Pleased she is stable and that her abcesses have been relieved.
Once my boy had his Imprints on and I got him stable it was onwards and upwards. The farrier could then get to work lowering his heels and helping with the rotation. He is now back in work

Good luck

Flippin heck and I thought I had problems! Hope everything goes well from now on for you both.
My lad is in his third week of an abscess that will not appear at all coupled with the complication that my vet thinks he has mild laminitis too. Farrier came out and wants xrays done as not prepared to dig about and create un-neccessary holes and vet does not think this is the best way and that if he shows positive to an area with foot testers that the farrier should dig there a bit first. ARRRHHH!
Farrier has not returned my recent messages asking him to come out and have another look at the situation so may have to get the vet out again as I am doing all I can in terms of poulticing and tubbing etc and dont know how long to carry on with a horse in pain..and I am worried about the damage it may be causing to his foot structure leaving it un-drained.

I would definately say to get x-rays done, the vet who performed the dorsal wall resection would only do so much before getting them x-rayed the following day - luckily seems to have done the right area and doesnt need any more cut out her feet, but the last thing you want is the wrong bits dug out! They can see all sorts on the x-rays such as gas/air and serum stuff.
Its horrible to see, they are so crippled with abscesses, good luck, I will try and put some pics up of my mares feet once bandages off tomorrow, you can see just how much was cut out of hers!

First pic is before, with abscesses bursting out coronet band on both front feet

This pic I took yesterday, 4 days after, we had to take poultices off as so much wet muck coming out the poultice was saturated and vet thought best left open! I am cleaning twice a day with diluted hibiscrub and syringing into the tiny holes to flush out. Then spraying (which is why foot looks green!) It looks awful but shes alot happier! Clogs being re-fitted on Friday - fingers crossed

Ooooch...that looks so sore but she must feel so much better now the pressure of the abcesses has been released.
Hope Friday goes well and she continues to get better. x

The resection wasn't as "bad" as I thought it might be actually. Seems less invasive than some pics you see on hoof sites.

Glad to hear Josie is feeling happier in herself now and I sincerely hope her problems now start to improve. She certainly sounds like she's getting the five star treatment.
