Well went in to very big scary field and started off ok then the joys of spring got up his bum and decided to bomb off with me on board and yes down hill !!!!!!! i had no brakes and only a snaffle not a good combination when we came to a stop we went back to the yard to try another day with a stronger bit so i have brakes anyone got any tips on some good brakes

Isn't this the schoolmaster? And you can ride? Your instructor is very brave or silly to have allowed this if you weren't in control.

Depends what he does, but I have mine in a Lozenge (french link) snaffle normally and when I need extra brakes I use a pelham with short shanks and Lozenge mouthpiece, elastic curb chain and two reins, so I only use the curb when needed.

he is in a kk snaffle i must admit i was thinking along the lines of a pelham i have not seen the on you have described where can i look at one

In answer to tias reply how meny people have owned a schoolmaster and how meny of there schoolmasters have had an off day also i can ride to a certain extent that is why i have an instructor to teach me also i had stearing not brakes so was in part control and i stayed on!

My boy is ridden in a french link in the school but recently discovered the benefits of a 3 ring - is working wonders so far in wide open spaces (where previously I had no brakes!)
Got a french link version of it so it's close enough in the mouth to what he's used to...

BTW am also not v brave at down-hill work....up-hill no problem, but dropping off banks, coming down steps xcountry...Yuck!

Next time, get the instructor up onboard to test the brakes and see how controlled the horse is. I am sorry you had a bit of a shaky ride.

I'm not criticising you. I am suggesting that the instructor took a risk here; thankfully you weren't hurt and hopefully the instructor learned a lesson too.

I have a horse that occasionally tanks off.

I think it's important to never let them know that they can!

If I think he may take off today, then I use a 3 ring snaffle and put my normal reins on the top ring (so it's just like a hanging snaffle and not really severe) and a spare rein on the 3rd ring which is severe but works, as my emergency 'handbrake' and it works a treat!
