For those of you who had a similar problem, re my post last week... the big ginger boy has been lame (right fore) for about 3 weeks so on Friday we headed off to the vets for x-rays. Thank God no fractures etc. Vet thinks bruising/pain due to the flatness of his humungous TB feet. So the farrier came out to put some Equipak on both front feet - re-shaped his feet, shod him and then injected a black rubber material onto both soles. Now the lad has flat rubber undersides to his feet. Voila - instantly sound !! Can't quite believe it. We'll see how he goes over the next few days but the improvement has been amazing. He's now turned out in a v small paddock with overreaches on. He was so excited to be off box rest he just bucked on the spot. Very impressed by my new farrier.

Keep me updated I have a lame ginger beast as well with flat front feet.can I ask what he charged.

The material was about £25 for both feet and then he charged an extra £5 per foot to apply it. So the shoeing was £40 (front feet only) and materials £25. Not cheap but if it means he's sound then a price worth paying IMO (the vet's bill for the investigation was about £400 !!!).

Thanks for that might enquire with farrier. We start work on soft surface next week so I will see how he is .

Can i join your new clique please??

My GINGER!! Thoroughbred mare has just gone foot sore, she was fine on Sat but very sore on Sunday. Got the blacksmith out on last night and he has taken her shoes off and told me to get Keritax because her feet have gone squishy, probally with all the rain we've been having. The Equipak sounds good but my horse lives out all year round and heard that you have to keep it dry.

Why oh why did i buy a Thoroughbred, its just been one thing after another

Ginger tbs maybe they are all the same -flat feet collapsed heels and nearly always broken.
Keritex is good for hardening feet and cornescresine around the coronet is good for improving quality and encouraging growth.Do you use a hoof supplement I find that helps.Mine has a splint at the moment and coming back from spavin surgery.

No, i don't have her on a hoof supplement at the moment because her feet have been fine up until Sunday, it so strange how suddenly she gone lame. Shes definately got squishy soles but we're quite baffled at the moment as to whats causing her front feet to be that sore although she is a sensitive soul.

I know you've had a bad time with yours. See the broken horses post, its growing by the minute!

I can be added to the lame ginger flat footed tb colony too!
Although with a fab farrier doing some remedial shoeing he is a million times better!

Good luck, hope your horse continues to stay sound.

Err my TB is not ginger but IS flat footed and LAME!! After doing her suspensory in last year and developing cataracts in her right eye I thought all was going (too) well when bringing her back into work..it WAS..she went lame 2days after our second canter, I immediately thought suspensory but as it turns out she has cut the heel bulb on the same leg she did the suspensory and it's got infected. So we are currently on day2 wet poulticing...dread to think what she has in store for me next...
