Just thought I'd put an update post on how Liri is doing. She had the metalwork taken out of from her fractured jaw a couple of weeks ago. The stitches were due to come out today, but unfortunately the wound burst open at the weekend so had to call the emergency vet out to remove them early. He basically cleaned the wound right out, back to the bone which is now visible, and said to treat it like an absess. Good news is that the fracture is healed, we just need to get on top of this nasty infection now, and keep the wound open. Any opinions, advice, comments gratefully received.

This is her wound before we cleaned it up last night.

Bless her, what a horrible thing to happen. I must have missed the post on what happened but hope the infection clears soon for her and for you!!

Poor girly. Good to hear the fracture is healed. I suppose it's just a question of keeping the wound clean and open to drain any nasty out. I have had good results with vitamin E oil (squeezed out of the capsules) when the skin starts healing and there is no infection, but check with your vet first.

salty water

if she doesn't like you touching it put it in a syringe and squeeze it out gently
needs to heal inside out - which you know anyway.I was told don't use wound powder and to be fair it has taken my boys war wound about 4 weeks to close up enough for me to start working him again. Think 2.5 inch diameter hole were the sarcoid was removed - he was stitched up with a nice neat row of stitches and then the ned decided to remove them with his teeth about 4 days later.
Patience is what is required and hugs from mum to make her feel better

Only just caught up withthis! Poor you and poor horsey!

My old boy broke his jaw getting cast and thrashing around in his stable. He was 20 at the time and to be honest I was worried sick it would be "the end". But with good nursing we pulled him through! He did his at the beginning of May 2000 and when I moved yards (only 1.5 miles away) I was able to ride him there at the end of September 2000. The most difficult bit was getting him to eat and I relied on Readigrass - dustbinfuls of the stuff!

It left him with a pronounced lump at the site of the break but he had another happy 5 years with me.

Hope your horse continues well with his/her recovery!

Oh dear poor horsey!! Was she kicked? When my boy was kicked very badly the vet gave me a cream to deal with any proud flesh that might appear. It was brilliant as it also helped the wound close up much quicker when we got rid of the infection. Not sure of the name but in a weeks time you may want to ask the vet because it helped close up the wound before there could be a reinfection. Good luck with horsey! Sending get well soon vibes

There was somebody on here whose horse put a hole in it's head, just above it's eye. It was packed for a while but then was left to heal open as it couldn't have a dressing on it.

I think it might have been PF or Jade or Tia (who has now left).

If anybody else can remember who it was, they may be a good person to talk to.

I do hope you manage to clear the infection.

I think it was Tia, quirky. She always had an interesting aray of hideous injuries.

I second the saline solution, she may also appreciate it slightly warm.

Good luck with her - poor love.

when my boy cut his head open in the field he got a little bubble of air in it. the vet came to stitch it up and she couldnt get teh air out. she said his head will swell up like a balloon tomorow but dont worry to much unless theres something else like blood coming from his nose. sure enough it did and he looked so strange, watch out for air bubbles in his face is all the input i can come up with. im sure your vet has told you everything else.
poor girl hope she gets well soon and gets lots of hugs kisses and mushy food.

ChicoMio, will try the vit E when further down the line, thanx for that.
AJB123, your post made me feel very positive, especially that you could ride so soon again afterwards.
Teddysunnybyron, yes she was kicked, bitten and looked a complete mess, I think she was cornered. Luckily, everything else has healed well, its the jaw that won't.
Querky and AmyMay, it was Tia, just been trawling old posts, shame she has left, she could have been a good source of info.
tazanotabza, I will watch out.

Thanks for all your well wishes.

I had a pony a fair while go that had two tooth root absecess' in 6 weeks both resulting in surgical extraction and holes in his lower jaw. I was given bottles of pevidine scrub, comes in two forms one with blue dye so they can see where it has been used in theatre and another without.
A weak soloution(so it looks like pee)is strong enough to clean without irritating. Its not as drying as hibscrub either.
I always use it on wounds, mud fever and anything that looks a bit gooey.
I hope your girly heal ok, it looks like she has most definately been in the wars.

benmilo, thank you for sharing that, poor pony, must have been painful. I'm using diluted hibiscrub in it and am wondering if that is the right thing. My vet seemed happy with it, but the more I read, the more I doubt.

Hibiscrub seems to have become the item of choice for cleansing wounds etc over the past few years, it was 10 years ago that I had my nightmare 10 months with Bob, just what an 18 year old girl wants to cope with!
I was flushing directly into his tooth root cavity through a lambs feeding tube with diluted pevidine twice a day.

Hibiscrub has a drying effect on skin, I was told this when treating mud fever last winter with it and had little success just had dry flakey hands after a few days. I have found it can depend on the age of your vet aswell as to what they reccomend.

Manuka honey worked wonders on my mare colic surgery scar which was very very infected and would just not dry up. Just blob it on the wound, it's anibacterial so will help get rid of the infection.

Whatever you use to wash the wound make sure it is very dilute - just enough to colour the water slightly.

Both iodine and hibiscrub inhibit wound healing if the solution is too strong.

(Salt water stings like hell - have you ever gone in the sea with a cut?? Makes me cringe every time owners bring in an animal with a bad eye "oh, I've been bathing it with salt water" Tell you what, I'll give you a corneal ulcer and make you swim in the sea with your eyes open! I guarantee you it'll be pretty unpleasant.)

Once you have cleared the infection the wound should close pretty quickly. Proud flesh shouldn't be a problem in that location, it is mainly leg wounds that suffer from this.

ApplegroveLorcan - rang my vet about Manuka honey because have heard how good it is but the vet said not to use it on her wound, although he also agreed it was good.
lauraandjack - have decided on 3 cleans a day, one with dilute hibiscrub, two with just a shake of salt, and she seems to tolerate this well

Thank you for your tips
