For all those who have been following the on-going saga with Lottie, thought I would post an update.

After a further visit to the clinic, she came home last Wednesday for a further 2 weeks box rest with a view to assess her then and if no improvement, refer for an MRI scan.

On Monday evening she had a silly 2 minutes in her box which was enough to make her hopping lame again on the right fore. Lots of heat and a strong digital pulse. Clearly something is seriously wrong.

Vet came to see her tonight and although she is not hopping lame, she is not sound so she is finally (this has been going on since Christmas) being referred for an MRI scan to find out what is going on.

Both vet and I are baffled as to what is wrong with her, but it seriously concerns me that 2 minutes silliness on a thick shavings bed is enough to have such a severe effect.

Any positive vibes greatly appreciated...

Let's hope you get a clear answer from the MRI. It's a great diagnostic tool for injuries in the foot, especially soft tissue. You should get a full written report from the vet who does the MRI scan and who will be in the best position to interpret what it picks up.

The worst thing is not knowing. Once you have an answer, good or bad, it's easier to deal with. Good luck.

Hi there .. I was wondering how you and Lottie were doing

I hope you find out more from the MRI scan and can find out what she is suffering from

Does she have shoes on now, as I cannot remember from your previous posts? My old boy had special shoes on, when he was suffering from Laminitis over 2 years ago, but had a thick shavings bed, and had a funny five mins in his stable when he heard his stable mate being trotted up in the yard next door (it's funny how they can even recognise hoof noise

) ... anyway the farrier then took his shoes off and the difference it made was incredible. So it was just a thought?

That's a good point about the shoes, because they will have to come off anyway for the MRI. I had mine taken off at the referral vets rather than at home, because I thought the horse was already so crippled she wouldn't get on the lorry without them. However I had a surprise, as she was not only quite capable of loading for the return journey without shoes, but she even seemed more comfortable than before!

She had various soft tissue injuries involving the DDFT and collateral ligaments, and getting the right foot balance was key to her recovery. We kept the shoes off and used an Equine Podiatrist. She has now been barefoot 2 years.

Yes maybe having shoes on for the travelling would be a very good idea and that's something else to be borne in mind isn't it. I never had that to think about as the horse in question decided 15 years ago that he was going to stay with me forever and refused to box

Hi

I remember you - we were at Bell Equine at the same time a few years ago for MRI's weren't we? Hope your horse is doing better than mine!!

No, she wont be going back to Bell, when I got her home from there last time she had impacted colic and had to go straight to the RVC for 2 1/2 weeks.

We're going to O'Gormans in Newbury. Fingers crossed they will look after her better!!!

Hi Eaglestone

Yes, she has got shoes on. Went she went back into hospital for the second time they decided to put heart bars on. Have been on for 10 days now. The diagnosis at that point was she was just foot sore which is absolutely ridiculous!

I asked the vet last night what he thinks is going on and he said he has no idea. We don't know if it was laminitis when she was first admitted to hospital as it just does not add up. It's great when no-one knows what is wrong with your horse.

I personally think it is going to be collateral ligament or DDFT damage. About 2 years ago she had a very similar injury to the left fore, lameness on and off, heat and pulse in the foot and MRI scan confirmed lesions to the collateral ligament, DDFT and severe bruising of the pedal bone. Right foot was clear at that time though.

Guess I will just have to wait and see....
