Update on Manuka honey use *pics- warning graphic*

Hi,

Am hoping this works as first time using photo bucket to post and on iPad so may be a little wrong with the pics!

A few of you may remember me asking where I could get Manuka honey from and you were all so kind and helpful - I thank you all again.

So anyway here we go: this was when I found her::eek:

2 days later we changed the baggage and it looked like this::eek:

Going the right direction and no infection.

Bandages changes then went to four days and the next one looked like this::)

So you can see it is already looking fab. Bandaged up again and told that next bandage change would be a week and to put some Manuka honey on. Changed that bandage and it looked like this::)

So today we changed the bandage again a week after adding Manuka honey and it looks like this!:)

So as you can see she has healthy tissue with little proud flesh. She is bearing weight on it well and tendon should heal straight - fingers crossed!

Any further advice greatly appreciated.

All I can offer is Manuka honey on toast! :D
 
I actually swore out loud at that first pic. How awful that must have been finding her like that. So glad the honey is doing such a great job :) i'll pass on the toast - that honey has a much more important job to be doing!
 
Pleased it is coming on well, but maybe its the pictures but the wound looks very proud fleshy???
Honey can have a drawing action (encouraging proud flesh formation in some cases) and is really good for cleaning very dirty sloughy wounds (encourages it to deslough+ natural antimicrobial action). If the wound is clean and coming on I would perhaps leave off the honey for one bandage change at least.

I would be slightly more concerned about how swollen the hock is above the wound, I would be bandaging as high up the leg as possible to reduce that if poss.

Really glad it worked, I was quite surprised recently when the vet used honey on a wound, but the results are looking very good.
 
You could use icing sugar to reduce proud flesh and aid healing.
I don't know the whys, but I do know it works, it's a Homeopathic (sp)
remedy and I have seen the results on a horse on a yard we were at,
horse ripped out all of upper inside thigh getting stuck on a gate, really nasty
wound, owner worked with vet and Homeopathic YO and the results were amazing
 
It certainly was a shock! I'll try and answer all of your questions but no idea how to quote!

The flesh growing back is actually nice a flat to the skin the photos are rubbish! It is being washed with saline solution to avoid any irritation. Well irrigated with every bandage change.

The vet is present for changing bandages and is majorly impressed with how it is healing but will of course be keeping an eye on proud flesh.

Believe it or not there is no swelling in her hock whatsoever. The pictures make it look bigger than it is and she has big chunky hocks, knees and massive ears!

Here is one of us learning to jump just to cheer me up!

The wound is looking amazing. I think the hock swelling will go down eventually.
Would be worth investing in an ARC equine machine to help with the inflammation.
 
So glad to hear the honey is working its wonders for your neddy.
Yikes :eek: I must admit I gasped out loud when I saw the first couple of pics (and I'm usually OK with gory photos). Looks horrible and I'm sure every horse owners nightmare but the manuka honey seems to be doing the trick.
My boy has some proud flesh on a previously banded sarcoid on his belly that got badly infected from flies. Do you think it might help with the healing process?
I'm game to try anything at this stage.
P.S. I hope your mare continues to recover well ❤❤❤
 
omg that is one wound, manuka honey is it the extra thick looks like yellow lard honey. or is it just runny manuka honey. also in summertime would it not be a swasp attraction. sound amazing, fair play to ya, looking great.
 
Ditto another poster how did she do that injury? Was is wire or electric rope?
Really horrible. I have electric rope with fasteners which should cause a break if a horse gets caught, but you never know.

She did unfortunately do this on a wire fence, we have wire and electric and it has never been an issue before but hey horses will damage themselves on anything!

The manuka honey I am using is meloderm (from NZ) as it is active manuka honey that is gamma irradiated to make sure there are no bacteria left. It is quite thick but I apply with a dressing, I too have been concerned about flies in summer but I think it specifcally says to cover once applied.

The hock is from the same injury - 18 days ago she was a lovely unblemished 6 yo, looks like now she will just be a lovely 6YO! :D

Wow, fantastic improvement! Manuka honey is great. I used it when my 2year old sliced his chest open and the stitches had burst. I used to warm it up and syringe it into the wound. It was a big nasty wound but he has no proud flesh whatsoever and barely a scar to show for it, just a few white hairs. Will post pictures for you when I'm home, can't do it on my phone!
