Update on Manuka honey use *pics- warning graphic*

I would say bandaging and natural healing did as much as the honey. Our yearling had EXACTLY the same injury, caused by the rope-type electric fencing. I dressed and bandaged every day using a wound gel and after 3 months bandaged every 3 days. it healed it exactly the same way as the injury shown, and then the flesh shown in the last picture gradually sort of condensed and dried and all that was left 10 months after the original accident is a slight bump and a little line where the cut was.

Of my!! When I opened this thread I thought it would be a reasonable sized wound but I'm pretty tough so didn't worry. That made ne jump!! It's huge and it looked like her leg was about to fall off!! Blimmin heck!! Fab results though. Glad its healing so cleanly :-)

Hi there, I dont doubt that good wound management is also behind the healing as she has only had honey on the wound for a week. I am not suggesting honey is some miracle balm - the title of the thread was mearly to let the people who had been so kind in answering my previous questions on the thread 'manuka honey' know that there was an update on my mare.

Still fantastic news that your yearling made a full recovery, we are only 18 days in so a long way to go..... did your yearling fully severe his extensor tendon? If so does he have a perfectly natural gait now in walk, trot and canter?

Wow, fantastic improvement! Manuka honey is great. I used it when my 2year old sliced his chest open and the stitches had burst. I used to warm it up and syringe it into the wound. It was a big nasty wound but he has no proud flesh whatsoever and barely a scar to show for it, just a few white hairs. Will post pictures for you when I'm home, can't do it on my phone!

Please do..... I am really keen to limit the amount of scaring (not that it matters so long as she is healthy!)

That first photo made me gasp with horror, as I'm sure you did! Great progress on the recovery, you're doing a fabulous job.

well it certainly looked just like yours, and was down to the bone at the front. But yes he has 100% normal gait and flexion/extension at all paces. It was the last bit of the healing process- that pink squashy looking flesh condensing to normal tissue so the skincould join took the longest. There is a good wound site- i think its called stepasidefarm.com that is very interesting.

That is brilliant news. The vet had said that she may have 100% recovery but may have a slightly abnormal gait as the tendon recovered but I am finding more and more people who have said the extensor tendon has healed wioth no long term issue. Did you do anything to aid the healing of the tendon?

Thanks for the web link :)

Not specially to the tendon but just kept the edges as close together as i could at first. when it first happened I didnt know whether to wash it or not, and as Id been there when it happened and was completely clean I didnt- I just put on wound gel, lint, gamgee and a cohesive bandage to apply slight pressure. I'm sure yours will heal fine- nature is wonderful :)

I had a horse go through electric, the tape type and do a similar injury although not as bad. Once starting to heal, I used nappy cream as the zinc is apparently good at keeping down scar tissue. I found that somewhere on the net after hours or researching. I believe it did work IME.
