Further to post below, just went back down to check how he was doing and he's significantly more uncomfortable and struggling to move about his box. Earlier he was moving around fine, just didn't want to step back when I asked him to. Quite worried that he has deteriorated in just over 3 hours. The heat seems to have gone compared to other leg but swelling has increased at the front of the hock, and he wont let me touch the area at all now. Had a chat with on call vet who is on her way to see him now, she too was concerned at the deterioration over such a short time. Will be leaving home shortly to go back down so will post an update later or tomorrow.

Let's hope it has to get worse before it gets better, IYSWIM. Bangs always swell and stiffen before they go down and ease up - the bruising has to come out. Fingers crossed it's nothing serious

I cant think what on earth he has done, its the front of the hock so a rather odd place to have been kicked (plus I couldn't see any sort of mark suggesting a kick)....

Are there any tendons/ligaments that run across the front of the hock joint?

I don't know what we are going to find out tonight tbh, but even if she gives him some bute to make him more comfortable....argh! I'm seriously hoping he is just being a drama queen (he swells up like a balloon and goes lame if he ever cuts himself!)

Everything XXXX for you.

DExger was barely able to walk last week after having a fight, 2 days in got worse, 2 days after that was fine, hope the same applies to you ((( hugs))))

In response to your earlier question, yes, at the front of the hock there are the common and the lateral digital extensor tendons depends on where exactly he's injured... wait, i'll find you a good google image... http://www.tallyoaksvet.com/img/equineanatomy/leg-anatomy.jpg

Hope the vet can bring you some good news!

Small update, vet saw him late last night, clipped area to check for any small wounds and found absolutely nothing so ruled out joint infection. So other possibilities at this stage are either a fracture/chip or he's severly wrenched himself somehow. Not sure which one I'm most worried about given my experience with soft tissue injuries and still having one thats still not come right! He's spent the night in a robert jones and had some IV bute, and she's going to come back this morning to see what he's like and probably x-ray the hock. She did say that judging by the swelling (which is actually over both parts of the hock she said - front and then to the side) that could well suggest he's wrenched himself, but needs to see how he is this morning once the bandage comes off.

Going to have to take him over the road and stand him on the drive of the people that own the field and stables as we don't have power, such fun....

Re rug straps, a possibility although I didn't notice any damage to the rug but will check when I go back down. He came in with it all done up as normal. I didn't even notice anything was wrong at first, got down there yesterday pm and he was grazing quite happily in the middle of field, came in for his tea fine, it was only when I was giving him a groom and asked him to step back for me that I noticed he couldn't step back on it!
