Update on my I can start looking for a doggie thread

Well, everytime I think I can start thinking about a doggie, life goes mad. Which doesnt really bode well does it

Anyway, I have thought about the breeds I like and have narrowed it down- slightly!

Border Collie, Labrador or Greyhound (or cross breeds) from rescue.

Ridgeback or GSD as a puppy.Only because I would love to watch a ridgeback puppy grow up- thanks to handsome Finny. My OH would like a GSD but would prefer a puppy with known breeding for health/temperment reasons.Plue he would prefer a black one.

Now this isnt to say I'll change my mind- especially when I go to a dog rescue. Regarding a ridgeback or GSD, although we would prefer a puppy, we would be happy with a rescue too.

We are thinking along the lines of rehoming a rescue dog around August/September time, when OH's business is running and settled and I really hope I have a job by then. As I said before the dogs can go to work with OH some days and to the yard with me on others. There may be the odd day when they will be left for 2-4 hours max (eg food shopping, OH out the office). Would this be ok do you think?

Then depending on how our rescue gets on we might start looking for a puppy or second rescue next April/May.Again does this sound reasonable? I know it will depend on how the first dog settles in and how they are with other dogs.

Hope that makes sense? Bit zombified after a manic week of helping out OH with work.

.....if you are going for a puppy as opposed to a rescue I agree with your OH.....u cant go wrong with a shephered, they make lovely pets

in Hampshire. Stripe is a Lurcher link dog, he's fully vacc'd
neutered and microchipped and a lovely boy.

I am totally biased towards GSDs, but would agree that a puppy is best. I know there are lots in rescue but unless you know their full background you could find yourself with problems, unfortunately they are a much abused breed and can so easily be spoilt. If your other half is set on a black GSD just make sure you see full papers and if possible both parents (even if the stud dog is elsewhere). I have heard of all black Shepherds which have been produced by the introduction of a bit of black lab!

If I really did narrow it down, it would be a choice of collie or shepard (one on each maybe

Thats what we have been thinking really. I know all dogs are different and we may find one who needs rehoming due to change in circumstances etc, but we'll still look for a GSD puppy first.

I love GSDs. They are wonderful dogs if treated properly. But you have to get used to the permanent "shadow" following you everywhere!!

As previous poster said you need to be quite experienced with the breed if you want to rehome as they are incredibly sensitive.

And make sure you check hipscores of parents.

Though I am not actively involved in breeding or showing Shepherds anymore I do know quite a lot of breeders, lines etc. If you do decide to look for a shepherd pup and want advice I am happy to help. Please feel free to ask.

You would be suprised at the number of rescue Ridgebacks there seem to be - as puppies!!

Obv not all are tiny weeny like this... (hehe not that I'm tempting you again)

(Excuse me and my beaming grin in this pic... it was the day I chose my baby - wasn't he an ugly bug!!!! LMAO!!! - I was shattered having driven 4-5hrs to see the pups!!!)

But around the 5months...

Or 9month age bracket...

Was speaking to a man at the weekend who had just rescued a 9mth old bitch...

If I could afford a PACK of ridgebacks (oh and had the space) I would have LOADS... I can only Fit one finny in my car!!

Thing to remember is that they get BIG!!!

Finn at 9.5months now weighs 9 stone and stands 30" at the shoulder tall... he is still growing - he is now bum high again by another inch so is going to catch up in front!!

He is a bit of an exception to the rule as males are according to breed standard only supposed to stand a max of 27" and weigh 37kgs (finn is 57kgs!)

I think your routine sounds wonderful... my boy is sssoo loyal to me... LOVES me to pieces and likewise I wouldn't be without him.. my life has changed to suit him... I plan day trips for HIM!! LOL....

He doesn't go far from my side EVER - will check where I am and generally looks after me... he's still a baby in his head and doesn't understand when another dog isn't playing and is being nasty!!

He's actually a big wimp - but we will see what happens when his hormones kick in!!!

So a RR gets my vote!!

Oh and I have nicknamed RR's Scooby Doos as Finn is the same as scooba!!!
