My 21 year old ruptured his near fore sdft in May. He was on box rest for about 6 months , then started walking in hand for 5 mins building up to 30 mins by adding an extra 5 mins per week. He is now doing light hacking at a walk at weekends till spring when I can do more with him to build fitness before asking for trot work. He goes out for 30 mins per day turnout in the menage until spring when the fields won't be a sea of mud and he can go out 24/7. He stands slightly oddly in the stable but when outside or ridden stands 4 square. It seems to be a habit developed when he couldn't bare weight on the bad leg. I'm really amazed to have got this far. I do have an odd problem with him though.

Hacking out he is 100% sound, in the school which is sand and silica he is sound but every so often he does a really odd step with his 'bad' leg. He doesn't feel lame the nearest I can explain is that it feels like when you go down a step and its a slightly longer drop than you expected, so you suddenly have to move the leg you are about to step on an inch more than you expected. Its a tiny , tiny lurch. He doesn't nod or anything when he does it. He can anywhere between 30 strides to 100 and not do it, then suddenly put this odd step in.

He did do it a few times when first hacked out, but no longer does so. It now only happens in the school. All I can think of is that maybe its where the school surface shifts slightly. I am quite mistified though!
