Hi, I posted the other day about searching for a companion for Ruby our 1yo lab (see sig for piccy!) Well we went to the RSPCA kennels on Sat. to meet the older lab and they got on well in the kennel and my OH got a bit enthusiastic and put him on hold awaiting a home check. I liked him and I feel really sorry for him as he is an older doggie and might be over looked but.. I think our house is a bit mad for him! We've got the horses and the hens and the cats and things are always happening and Ruby's always running around playing and retrieving things the cats have caught! I just think it all might be a bit much for him? I feel really bad, I don't want to ring and say we have changed our minds but I'm not 100% sure about him.. what do you all think?!
I didn't necessarily want another lab, but am not sure which breed to look for in particular just thought a rescue dog, smallish!

Just a thought as you're in Norfolk - have you tried Meadowgreen Dog Rescue? It's a good kennels not far from Norwich with all sorts of dogs there. Also Dogs Trust at Snetterton. If you're not sure then maybe its best not to take him, just in case it doesn't work out. There's plenty of other rescues old and young!

How old is old? I have a lab who is 9/10 and is certainly not written off yet! She plays with our 2 year old lab, and is supposedley retired from shooting but does the odd retrieves. Swims miles and loves the hustle and bustle of family life

He's 8-10 (they are not sure) he was neglected so looks a lot older. Ruby is bossy with my Mum's lab who is 3 and chews his leg if he won't play with her! She wouldn't nec. ne like that with another dog though, my Mum's lab is a bit of a push over!!

Henry came from Dogs Trust Snetterton and I have to say they were very good.

Why don't you talk to the rescue people about your concerns, it's in their best interests to find the right home too.

People that I stable with recently took on an older dog (if not elderly) - and he is just wonderful. He was very quiet when he arrived (understandably). However, he's really come out of his shell - and quite frankly the more that's going on the better!

He particularly likes it when the ATV comes out........

i think the old lab sounds good as your home may give him a new lease of life and you also know the breed, choosing a breed you dont know may give you more stress
