Update on My skinless horse Pics Warning My Upset some of You

[ QUOTE ]
Ouch, is this the clay you used?

Is it exothermic

[/ QUOTE ]

Thats the one.....no it is not exothermic....it is actually cooling, which made it perfect for putting on damp hot smarting skin. It also h ad the wonderful benefit of covering everything up and making it fly proof.

To be honest I was a total cynic when it was suggested (i am a bit new to this Holistic vet thing my trainer has introduced me to them) but I have to say converted totally.

You do have to mix it with mineral water though as the normal stuff out of the tap causes the clay to react differently.

Oh God I sound like Liz Jones from the MOS!

Awww, bless him. Does he not need to be in the shade at all? Hope he gets better soon!

[/ QUOTE ]

In an ideal world for his skin he would be inside in a large airy stable...unfortunatley for the tying up he has to be outside so he can walk around a little but not in a big paddock so he does not walk about too much.....at the moment it is all a bit of a balancing act!

Don't worry every bit of exposed skin that is not covered in green clay, the flysheet or his flymask is slathered in total sun block 3 times a day....

Hopefully once the tying up sorts itself out a bit we can move him over to a bigger paddock which has a large portion of shade in it and once he hs rested a bit we can also move a nice quiet horse in with him to use as a rubbing post.

Rally glad he's on the mend, that eye looked horrific! You must have been so worried..... Loads of best wishes comeing your way.

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep the eye was really nasty and once it opened he did not appear to be reacting to any stimulus in it.....I spent a lot of time last week convincing myself that blind in one eye was ok and at least he was still with us.

He has certainly caused a hike in blood pressure, lots of tears and thankfully some LOL and thank god moments in the last 7 days

the poor boy! keep up the good work. All this happened due to him getting cast am i right or wrong?!

[/ QUOTE ]

Yep all due to being cast

Poor laddie. What a worrying time for you.

The skin under those flaps looks great though and it can't be an optical illusion on all the pics!

I bet that will all heal surprisingly quickly when the dead bit's have been cut off. Will you be able to keep all the healing bits covered to avoid sunburn?

He's a luck boy by the sounds of it.

Just one thing about casting rollers, my friends horse had one and every morning I used to retrieve it from under her tummy where it had slid to overnight! They have to go on pretty tight and he might find the pressure a bit much over the injured parts.

Sorry that's not very helpful, but just what I have seen of them.

Oh poor little man! It looks really really sore, but I am so glad he is on the mend now. He is lucky he has you, it is obvious you love him to bits.

I have never seen such a lot of necrotic tissue in my life!

I hope he gets better soon, what a shame he hurt himself. You look like you have a lovely set up there, I love your paddocks. x

It is hissing down with rain thundering and lightning and he is spending his first night in the stable since he was cast....we can't put a roller on him (too sore).....trainer is on tenderhooks as am I ......somehow I think not much sleep will be had tonight. OH had to restrain me from driving over and spendig night in his stable with him...guess who will on the phone at 7am to trainer tomorrow morning!

Ok call me an over protective Mum but I ended up sleeping there last night......he didn't try to lay down (probably because I was in the way!) but did a good line in snoozing!

I kept up a barrage of shouting 'stop bloody scratching'! as the lure of a good hard peice of wood to rub against was proving too strong......Hopefully weather is better tonight as I am totally knackered whereas the little [****] snoozed peacefully for most of the night.

Chico good idea......think we will try the straw bale route if this weather continues......Yawn!
