The vet has been and dug a deep hole in Ollies sole.I think we have been lucky in this case the puncture has stopped just short of the laminae .The wound has been dressed and treated and he is on antibiotics incase the nail causes infection. He was sedated because it was a deep wound but seemed comfortable when I checked him again 10 mins ago.Vet has suggested speaking to my farrier about a pad to keep wound clear of debris and to protect new sole which will make new growth.Farrier wants to let sole breathe so will ring him next week to discuss options .I have bought him a poultice boot which will fit over his hoof so he can go out for a couple of hours and graze until he is completely recovered. Thanks everyone for your feedback and help.

Glad to hear that it wasn't more serious and your lad will be ok.

That sounds like a hugely lucky escape, phew, what a relief. When my horse had a solar puncture, though probably not as bad as yours, the farrier pared it away so that no infection set in out of reach, and he packed it with pevidine soaked cotton wool, which I changed regularly. The hole grew out very quickly. Hopefully you can put the worry behind you very soon.

Hiya ... very good news .... thanks for the update and hope he doen't try the next option that my TB did after his nail exploits .... I found a screw in his frog ..... luckily that was only is the soft squidgy bit
