Update on new horse

My new horse is living out at the moment 24/7 due to the fact he wont stay in the stable on his own. Neighbouring horse is away until tomo. I thought it best to leave him out after he tried to climb over the stable door (with anti weave grill) I am hoping he will settle down and be able to live in during the nights when next doors horse is back. He is good in every other way, he is well behaved to lead and i have lunged and ridden him and he was a star.

I have been spending a lot of time with him on the ground, just not in the stable as he becomes such a wild beast

Even in the block he wasn't happy. My confidence is growing with him and i am correcting any rudeness outside of the stable (of which to his credit, there isn't much of) Fingers crossed that he feels safer in the stable with company around. He seems to be settling a little bit each day, as i took him into the block today to change his rugs (was having to do it outside) and instead of calling for other horses and trying go back out, he let me run a body brush over him and change his rugs. Sounds a simple thing to be able to do, but just 4 days ago he was trying to bite and barge me out the way

Next step the stable! lets hope it's onwards and upwards

You're doing very well indeed

. Just keep doing what you're doing and over time you'll be doing all you want and need to do in the stable as well. Some horses are just not good on their own, and it's definately early days

Sounds like you are making great progress with your new horse, we all have teething problems with our horses.

Thanks guys, still very unsure as to how he will react being stabled again, but i have to try as 24/7 winter turnout is not allowed. Feeling more positive though. I have also ordered a infill for the grill on the door so he can't get his legs over again when i try stabling him

If it's any consolation, we have a new pony who tried to get his legs over the stable door yesterday.

Today he is a different pony, calm and as good as gold.

Some settle quicker than others, but I just take the view that he will come into his stable for short periods, and eventually he will get used to where he is.

we had a youngster jumped over the door,never been stabled before.put a full grill up and with horses next door is now flat out asleep within an hour of coming in now

a bit of approach and retreat i think....my mare hated being stables and now she lets herself in!! im lucky as she can have the option of walking around the yard ....in and out of her stable when she pleases (not all the time only when im there) but that helped tremendously....

good to hear you have got on well with him otherwise.

Time, patience and consistency and am sure you will be fine.

Frank was a real stresshead when I bought him, he had never settled on previous yard where he had been for 2 months before I bought him.

He would barge, and generally be bolshy. You wouldn't have thought it was the same pony a month or so later and now he will pretty much always be asleep (or eating) in stable or yard and can be completely trusted with children all brushing different bits etc.

I do think it is easier for most horses to settle in when they can be out 24/7 if they are a little insecure as they get more of the 'herd' so I think it will be better when he has a neighbour back and get the grill. Not sure how your stables are, will he be able to see neighbour, we have a talk grill between our 2 which is really nice.

Just a thought, but could you instead off shutting the sable door put a summer chest strap across the doorway. I'm trying to think of the name but it doesn't come to mind. could be he'd feel happier not being boxed in and that way if he did try and jump out he wouldn't hurt himself or do any great damage.
