Well I bought a new saddle last Thursday and have tested it out over the weekend.

I got one of the new Thorowgood T4 cob saddles from a local tack shop. They were really helpfull and spent a lot to time making sure it fit her properly etc. so that helped me immensely as she is the first horse I have ever owned and I am a bit of a numpty. They have also told me to take her back in 8 weeks and they will re-check it for me.

Anyway, I had a good ride in it on Friday evening and did a little bit of jumping and it was so good. Then hacked out in it on both Saturday and Sunday and was most impressed.

The main thing is that this saddle seems to make me sit better if that makes any sense. I seem to naturally sit much straighter and my leg is in a better position, I also feel like I am sitting deeper which makes me feel much more secure. Even when like on Sunday my lovely little coblet spooked whilst hacking and just sat almost glued to the saddle.

This has been a revelation for me and I know I probably sound like some kind of moron but I never realised that a good saddle would make such a difference.

Being so old before owning my first horse I sometimes feel shy of asking "stupid questions" and I doubt my ability all the time so anything that helps me feel better is just great.

It makes perfect sense that a properly fitting saddle makes you sit better and puts your legs in the right place:). Well done for taking the time and money to get a saddle fitted properly - as you have discovered already a properly fitting one gives you more security when you are riding!!:):)

And as for 'stupid questions' there is no such thing - we all have lots to learn all the time. The day you have nothing to learn is the day to give up - everything is in constant evolution. That what is so good about this forum - there is always some one who knows the answer - no matter how obscure or stupid you may think it is.:)

Yeah a good saddle is the best thing ever!!

I always ask stupid questions, even tho there never stupid it's just your the only one brave enough to ask what most people are thinking!!

May look into the same saddle for my cob.

A well designed saddle can make the world of difference to you're position and riding, just as a poorly designed saddle (even if it suits and fits the horse) can be horrific. I rode in a really old saddle a while ago and just about got off in despair- I genuinely could not ride in it, my position was awful and I felt so unsecure. :o

Mostly it's to do with the stirrup positioning, which Thorowgood have got just right - Wintec's are too far forwards and make you sit in a 'armchair' position.

I've just ordered a T6 (in brown!) for my horse. I tried him the other day in the T4 (exact same model, just cheaper material) and it was a magical cure for my **** riding ;) :D
