Dont think OP from HG has been on here, flack came on HG thread from other HG members
I think.......................that is correct
No, the OP didn't give me the address, it was discovered by 2 members on here who are also members on HG.
What needs to be remembered here is that we ACTED on information given, checked the horse in question and deemed it NOT to be in need of immediate euthansia as was suggested last night. The horse we saw IS in poor condition and most definitely is suffering from cushings but is not ready for a bullet this very moment!
Well last night she was telling someone she knew the owner!!!! She needs to make up her mind about her story and stick to it................ now it is a different horse!!!!! out of interest BER did you make a note of the owners number? Maybe she should be told exactly what has gone on and who it was caused by!!!!!
BUT at the end of the day, the right thing was done, the horse was checked as soon as humanely possible, and as BER has said, the hrose is chipper and bright, apart from the fact that he is old and suffering from Cushings.
Toni - thanks for driving all that way today and going out of your way..............
28jen28 - We have ways of finding these things out!!!! LOL!!!
Can i just say that maybe 12 months ago when the WHW said it should be PTS, it was in worse condition than it is now, yet still survived the winter. Or maybe perhaps having it PTS was the easy option to save being called out again!!!! I would say the latter is the true answer.
For a horse of 45 years old i would have to say the owner has looked after it very well to reach that ripe old age.

Why? Seems the HG post was made out of genuine concern over a horse that looks in need of help.
What you suggest is particulary malicious.

Totally agree and I really can't understand this mentality, this is exactly the sort of attitude that will stop people reporting horses/animals in trouble.
As I have said the pic I was sent by BER looks no better or worst than the pic shown yesterday (though is from a more flattering angle and neck covered by mane, the pony still looks skeletal). I would also image that if the pony was down it would struggle to get up, due to its age, weak state due to lack of muscle and undoubtedly arthritic limbs (which would be distressing for anyone watching).

Its the 'letting it die of old age' that still concerns me....
If there are no welfare concerns then the owners shouldn't be worried about a visit from the WHW/BHS or whoever.

Exactly

Totally agree, imo to let that pony die of old age would be cruel.
I also cannot see any advantage in telling the owner about the OP on Horse Gossip. Just a matter of days ago someone doing the same thing may have saved the lives, and certainly saved the suffering of the two horses in Stamford. Lee Hackett actively encouraged people to draw their attention to horses in this sort of state, stirring it for the OP who had the pony's best interest at heart is surely going to make other people think twice aboutdoing the same, do we really want that.
In the original pictures posted the pony looked to be in a field of fairly lush grass, if he is laminitic surely this is not wise. I have a cushings pony who is kept lean because of frequent laminitis (but nothing like this pony I should add), I wouldn't dare let her have a sniff of grass as good as that.
Why are hg trying to say it is a different horse? I am confused!
I personally fail to see how that poor horse pictured originally could ever be described as bright and chipper its condition score could not be any lower, and if that is the case it would have been far kinder to send it to ranibow land as the whw advised a year ago!
The pics of last night made him appear much worse than he actually is. The owner even has a sign up on her stables with her phone number asking people not to feed him as he is laminitic. He's got to the age of 45 so she is obviously doing something right.

Sorry - I find that hard to believe. In my experience, pictures often make them look BETTER than they are when you touch them.
Getting to the age of 45 looking like that is NOTHING to boast of. I had a pony come here a few years ago on short-term livery until EMW could take him. He looked like that!! I nearly put him down then and there! After having DREADFUL teeth dealt with and being fed up on the right food, he improved so quickly we gave him the chance. He is still going and IS 44 (papered) and now looks a well cared for 30 thanks to EMW's expertise!
Horses don't die nicely of old age! They starve - or their circulatory systems collapse (so this pony could spend hours lying in a puddle waiting for someone to find him - or for his lungs to fill up and suffocate him slowly!
I don't know which horse is what now - but BER deserves a pat on the back for going to check up. OP on HG seems to be changing the story a bit -
but let's hope the horse is seen and dealt with properly.
Why oh WHY won't some people be strong enough and kind enough to face facts when a horse/pony has reached the end of the road!
If he was mine he would have been PTS last last year without a doubt. Regardless, he WAS happy enough, I'm not likely to take 6 hours out of my day then come back and feed you all a load of bull. The concern raised the other night was "was he in need of PTS there and then", I checked him and the answer was NO.
That is not say that I condone him being kept alive indefinitely, I only hope the owner has the compassion to do what is right by him NOW before it's too late. As always, a week too soon rather than a day too late.
I, (amongst a lot of other people on here i am sure) really appreciate your voluntary time, effort and fuel spent in checking out this pony. Well done BER and thank you. If it werent for you and other people like you, we would be unable to raise the awareness and the standard of the wellbeing of equines. Keep up th egood work.
BER...for what its worth I think you did a grand job on checking on this horse.
I agree...better too soon than too late. There are very few ways of dying 'nicely'....if any.
If only they curled into a ball and fell asleep...would be lovely but just doesn't happen
I agree too better too soon than too late however in this horses instance I suspect the too soon was a few years ago. Not that I do not agee that it was very good of ber to go and see the horse, it certainly was!
And that is what makes me so angry, people are sometimes so selfish keeping an animal alive just for themselves as they cannot bear to face grieving when it is no longer around.
Are you implying the OP on hg did something wrong starling, surely she should be congratualted for drawing peoples attention to this pony's plight. As BER says in her more recent post, I hope the owner does the right thing for him NOW.
