Having posted earlier in the week I was very down as vet had told me to consider PTS.

He was lame in front right and left hind. He went into vets today and in nowhere near as lame as he was. He blocked out sound on his sacroiliac. The vet said it was very hard to check as he we only a tiny bit unsound in the first place.

She has injected steroids and it is now a case of waiting to see how he does.

As mentioned in my previous post, he was doing his nut in the box and had been seen to canter round his box and double barrell the walls. I shouldn't think for one minute that's done his back end any good.

As regards the front foot with navicular, he had been shod only 6 days before she came out to see him when he was very lame. As he is improving so soon, the line of thinking is now that he could well have been footsore after the shoeing. He is having remedial shoeing with pads and sometimes it can take them a while to adjust.

She is much more positive and says that he may well come sound enough to be a very posh hack for me.

I have managed to find a new home for him with a small turnout pen which should help him mentally. If all goes well and he adjusts ok and behaves then he could well come right.

On vets advice, I will be sedating him when he moves and for his first few times out.

Thanks for all your replies to last post and for the first time in weeks I think I may just sleep tonight!!

i'm really really sorry to hear about this. I apologise if this little anecodte is unwelcome(!) - but i used to share a horse who had navicular. He had it for quite a few years, and was a great hack and taught me a lot, until he reached 16, was continually lame and was PTS. So i know how you are feeling. I really hope the outcome is different with your horse, at least until a long time from now.

Best wishes!

JustHelen, thanks for your reply no it's not unwelcome. My first pony had it as well and the only way I could keep her sound was 24/7 turnout all year round I just hope it is the same with this lad.

My dad gave my daughter money towards buying him but, died suddenly 6 weeks later aged 61. This lad is the last present from Grandad so he is very special to us all.

Kelly09 vet has given me lots of Sedalin and told me to keep him dosed up for the first 3 days. If only they could understand they mustn't keep charging about and kicking the walls eh?

I will keep you updated, moving him to new yard on Saturday

All is not lost although it seems bad news at the mo. My mare was diagnosed with navicular at 15 and went on until she was 21 and was PTS with a completly unrelated condition. I was lucky to find a truly brilliant farrier who got her back to being sound and a happy girl and I mainly hacked her but also did a bit of showing and dressage although we had to drop a couple of levels.
I tried to retire her but she turned into a considerably miserable ned who was a real pain, the minute she was worked again she bloomed.
So good luck and fingers crossed you have many more happy years together.
