Just an update on my post from Monday night.
(Please don't shout - I know this is in the wrong place, but so many people have asked me how she is, I thought I would post it here as well as in Dog section)
Poppy came home from the vets on Monday with steroids and vit K tablets and we had a long wait until her results came through yesterday afternoon. She has thrombocytapenia. She has had a severe reaction to her booster jab which she had 3 weeks ago. Her immune system went into overdrive to fight the foreign substance of the jab, and is now attacking her own blood.
She was quiet yesterday throughout the day, but ate and drank as normal. At 7am this morning she was sick and threw up dark blood. Again at 9am she threw up blood. We took her to the vets straightaway, where they took bloods again.
Her blood count has deteriorated. Her platelets are lower and her red blood count is lower. Red blood count was 36.5 on monday, and today it is 20. If it goes between 12 - 15 she will have to have a transfusion. Our red setter will give her blood. He is fit, healthy and young and the vet says he is ideal candidate.
Her red blood count is low because she has a bleed inside which we cannot stop. We need the platelet count to improve because this will help the blood to clot and in turn stop the bleed. Then her red blood count will improve. She will be an in-patient until at least Friday.
Her red eye is improving and the blood has mostly drained away, but there is a tinge of red still in her eye.
Am besides myself with worry, but know the vets will do everything they can. And we have told them not to worry about the cost of anything. We don't have insurance for her, but will pay whatever it costs. I just want her home and well.
Thank you for all your kind replies the other day.
