MY farrier came back out today and after over 5 weeks, a bit of poking around finally revealed a nasty deep abscess!! He reckons it has been brewing for weeks and weeks as it is black and really nasty, we are now poulticing and letting it drain but am so relieved. Had hoped all along that this is what it would be but we had no heat for five weeks (only last 4 days) and no obvious sign of pain with hoof testers ands xrays were all clear. My farrier was absolutely amazed that he hasn't been acutely lame and that he has showed no reaction with the testers til now but we were both overjoyed when it appeared - would you believe you could actually hear the squishing under the sole this morning with the testers and still my horse hardly flinched (brave soldier!!) Finally after all these years I have seen pus in the foot - beginning to think that the most common ailment was infact a myth as mine always seemed to be the worst extreme injuries of the foot!
In the last 2 years have only had a fatal puncture wound with my last horse and then a tendon injury and now this, so was paranoid to say the least!!! Thank you all so much for your advice, it made me feel positive and encouraged and a
I'm going to have a large vino tonight!!

So glad its good news.
With one lame for five weeks with deep bruising, and another with an abscess I sympathise!

Pleased to hear your farrier found the abscess and your boy is on the mend. Seeing pus oozing out of the foot is a wonderful site. No they're not a myth, my younger horse has had 7 so far! My 36yo cob had one similar to yours, it took 4 weeks for it to ripen. He became very very lame but as soon as the vet had dug it out the pus oozed out. Can't tell you the delight and pleasure each time I've tubbed it, swabbed it and poulticed the muck out and see him sound again!

You must be feeling very relieved. Sorry to hear about your other horse, but at least you can rest easy now.
