Tonight I put her headcollar and leadrope on before she started on her dinner. She looked at me like I was a bit crazy then just tucked into her dinner. After a couple of mouthfuls she tried to go outside the shelter but I didn't let her, again a bit of a funny look but no fuss and she started to munch again. This happened a few more times and she started to just eat and ignore the lead rope.

Just as I was putting her turnout back on the wind got up a bit and she tried to go outside again but I didn't let her. She got the ump but I pulled her back, she tried again so I pulled back again. She grabbed a mouthfull of food and tried to make a run for it but luckily I had a good grip and managed to turn her towards me. By now she had the right ar$e as she was not getting her own way & I did think for a second that she was going to go up. At that point I did begin to get a bit worried and wondered if this was such a good idea

I looked her straight in the eye and told her to calm down, chill out and enjoy her dinner .......she did!!! I finished doing her neck straps up and quietly took her headcollar off. Of course she went straight outside, had a look around and came back in again!

I think it went ok, I am going to try it again in the morning and see how it goes, hopefully she will realise quickly that its a lot quicker and easier if she just stands still and lets me sort the rugs out. Fingers crossed

Its almost like she's anxious, so keeps checking whats going on outside? Unless she's just not a greedy horses - Chex wouldn't leave his food bucket if there was an earthquake!

No not as bad as that thank goodness. Whilst I am changing her rugs she just walks off and if I am in the way I get knocked flying. She has totally lost her manners in the field shelter and its a case of me restamping them. I started tonight with a headcollar and leadrope and she got the major ump and I did think that she was going to go up as she could not get her own way. DH is going to put a ring in the shelter over the weekend so I can tie her up while I am changing her rugs. I think my original post is on page 2

Thats the nail on the head I think, its an anxious/nosey check that she does, she literally walks outside the shelter has a 2 seconds look around and comes straight back in again. I do feel a bit mean if she is anxious but she has got to learn that she can not knock me flying because she wants to have a gander outside. She knows there is nothing to be worried about, no one is coming to get her and she is safe but she has to go outside

She has been in this field for 2 years so its not like its new to her either

I missed replying to your original post, but I really do feel that just tying her up is all you need to do. She will soon learn her manners, and it will save any direct conflict between you.

I think she is just messing you around to be honest. Once you have done the same thing every day for a few days she will soon get the idea.

Hi

Everyone is different but I wouldn't touch my horse in any way when it was eating its hard feed. Even if at a competition and the bucket is clipped onto the rail in front of the lorry windows I wouldn't interrupt him although he never would have minded I just think that they are better off left to eat on their own.

a lot of other people don't go near their horses when they are eating (see previous thread

) but my mare has always had bits done to her when she is eating and she is not bothered at all. She is just being a boulshy madam and need to be reminded that she can't push me about!
