Tomorrow the 20 year old 13hh pony, Carigeen Moss, retained from the last sale, is sent through the mart.

The "trustees" have had weeks in which to sell this pony privately, and the SSPCA have had plenty of time in which to take on board the previous justified criticism of their poor performance and to make more appropriate provision.

However, with a supreme contempt for this animal's welfare and for the public outcry that ensued last time, the choice has been made to enter this very uncommercial prospect, at perhaps the most financially difficult and inappropriate time of year, in what has to be described, based on its previous performance, as a low class mart.

I don't have words with which to express the depth of my disgust.

There are only 37 entries so hopefully it will be over quickly and the mare wont have to stand around for long. It is a shame when these old horses end up at auction and I hope for her sake that someone sees some potential in her to become a companion or childs pony and will offer her a great home. Its not the end of the world to send her through an auction, unless the meat man has his sights on her.

I'm planning to go tomorrow so hopefully it will find a nice home

James, that was perfectly described. Sadly, the bulk of supported welfare charities are simply not fit for purpose, and the reason for that is that they have more interest in fund raising, than the welfare of the animal.

Those who direct the SSPCA are, probably, no better than the clowns who administer the RSPCA, here in the south. They are a disgrace.

I may well be alone, but I applaud your condemnation.

scotsmare, I'll PM you.

Alec.

hear hear d4e5f6.
those who are sending this poor old mare to a sale, especially at this time of year, should hang their heads in shame.
i hope that she finds a lovely home, but i'm a realist, so i hope it's not too traumatic and is all over quickly for her if she doesn't go to a super genuine new home.

Jamesmead I could not have put it better myself. Considering what happened the first time round, I cannot believe that after the huge public outcry that the SSPCA and other connections are putting a 20 year old pony through this. The first sale was weeks ago and I am sure they could quite of easily tried to sell it privately.

The SSPCA tried to hold themselves up the first time round.......the fact that they are going ahead with this aged pony in the same format tells me that they are not worth the charity status they hold!!

I feel very saddened that despite all the post the authorities concerned are going forward with this plan. The only plus side is this has had so much publicity that there is a good chance this mare will find a decent new home. I stopped suporting the RSPCA years ago after they showed on more then one occasion what a shambles they are.

Is there any news on what happened to this pony?

As far as SSPCA is concerned, when I lived in Scotland the 'new' Chairperson was outgoing Chairperson of BHS so one would have thought they would have had some guidance on equine welfare?

rollin, what on earth made you think that a BHS official, who then moved to a post within a charitable body, and one which would purport to represent equine welfare, would then have any influence, what so ever?

If you feel gullible and silly, I wouldn't worry too much, you aren't alone, most of us have expected better, from them, in the past.

I would like to hear that there has been a humane end, as this pony has been a good servant to someone, over the years.

Alec.

The news is that neither Carrie nor Moz who missed the original sale were presented.
An enquiry made--suggested the 2 were to be left in mart lairage until the next sale in MAY
The news I heard was they were sound on Wed before the sale but lame again by Saturday

Please will others ask the same question--what is to happen to them now?
I will be angry if these 2 are pts without people willing to rehome them being given that opportunity but would prefer pts than them continuing to suffer abscesses/laminitis.
