Update on the shes so ruined post

I had her back checked today. She said the shoulder is an old injury and she will have been in pain a long time as it's never been allowed to heal. It's as a result of the mare being a little downhill an where her backs dipped an I'll fitting saddle has been digging into her shoulders. She said she thinks she may have the very beginnings of kissing spines from poor riding/tack. She said even after some time to heal she will still likely have remembered pain so I should just give the mare time with a treeless saddle on stood in her stable etc so she learns not to associate tack with pain. She thinks time off will be beneficial and said not to give up on her :( I've been at work all day but my friend who was with her with the chiro just rang me and relayed the news back. Not the news I was hoping for but still not the worst.
 
Just think as positively as you can! At least you know what the cause is now so you have something to work with. You can change tack to fit her, take some time to get her used to wearing a saddle which isn't causing pain.. And if you choose to, to have X-rays taken of her spine to see what's going on there. She sounds like a very genuine and honest mare to not have let you known she was in pain sooner :)
 
I'd see that as good news actually - there is a reason for what she is doing, it is a sensible reason, and now you can work on it.

I'm not sure about putting a saddle on in the stable, doesn't seem like a small space like that would be a great place to be if she reacted very badly? Also, does she react to being saddled, or is it more that she reacts to being ridden? But I'm sure other people will be able to give you better advice on that than me.
 
She doesn't actually respond THAT bad to being saddled, she makes a face but that's all, same with a rug but tbh she's such a well mannered mare on the ground that it wouldn't surprise me if she tolerates it as much as possible but the pain is just too much under saddle. I feel guilty as sin for riding her just that once knowing now that she was in pain. It was so obvious too, leading inhand and she was quiet as a lamb, the moment a rider was on she was tense and uptight. Still, at least now I can do what needs doing to get her all comfy again :)
 
Ok, so let me get this straight? This horse is in absoloute 'agony' yet she is perfect to ride in a school or jumping? And a saddle which fitted her perfectly isn't good enough for you? And poor riding, just no! I would love to be half as good a rider as her old owner, she has her BHS stages, she's spent two years at one of the best equestrian colleges in the country - and yet you criticise her knowledge of horses? She clearly doesn't associate tack with pain as she stands perfectly still while she is tacked up. You know about her driving injury from many years ago - and this may leave a slight element of physical pain - but yet she never showed any in the many years after the accident.

Seriously Ginny - I know this is a huge grab out for sympathy and attention. But just grow up and stop acting like you have inherited a rescue mare. If you think she's in poor condition, you should have met my mare when she first came to England!

i know a few horses who have been in alot of pain with ill fitting tack and never really complained. some horses are just absolutly honest and they are the best ones! good luck OP on your mare, she sounds lovely and its a shame she ended up that way.
 
Sorry - but I just find it rather irritating that she is making it sound like this horse is an RSPCA case when she came from an extremely loving home - where she had been for her entire life - where she was cared for extremely well, and how she is a friend of the owner and feels the need to trash her like this. She knew the horse was at times very highly strung - but she still brought her despite knowing how she can be out hacking. Most horses are more forward out hacking, and she is making this horse out to be mentally scarred beyond repair.

It makes me utterly sick.
