After last night's performance I was ready for her this morning...

I took her for 15 minutes of grass after she had been mucked out, and she was really good walking to the field and walking away from it

I then took her into the arena for 10 minutes and walked her around in there. Ideally, she should be walked on a hard surface for her ligament, but the arena is quite compacted sand and rubber, and does not move at all when you are on it. I admit that walking her on the lane makes me nervous because if she got away from me she could get into several 20 acre fields without having to go very far... and there is also a ditch either side of the lane

Anyway, in the arena she did on big squeal and got all four feet off the ground, but I put the pressure on my Richard Maxwell halter and she really responded quickly. She just stood staring at me

We set off walking around the arena and she had a few moments when she felt as though she was about to explode, but I put some pressure on the halter and she stopped abruptly and we carried on

I wasn't as worried about her hurting herself today after the lovely replies last night to my post... Like someone said, surely she knows what she can and cannot do. If the first buck hurt like hell last night, common sense would tell her not to do that again.

I just wanted to say a big thank you to everyone who replied last night! I am slightly less paranoid today about her scar, and might even return to normal horse ownership in the not to distant future

I have followed your posts re Grace religously and am thrilled for you that she has made such a good recovery. I can't help but smile when you post about her leaping around, i know it must be a worry, but it also shows how well shes feeling, which is such a good sign, horses are pretty reliable and letting you know how they are and she obviously feels GREAT!!

I didn't get chance to reply last night, but a friends mare had colic surgery (with some intestine removed) and she behaved in a similar way - my friend was really worried that she would do damage but she didn't and now is back to doing what she did before and hasn't had any other problems (this was about 4 years ago).

I'm glad things went better today though - it is much more relaxing when they behave!!

Becki reading Marnie's post must encourage you that's great to hear.
I actually think our boy is better now than he has ever been.

I am remembering when I took him back from the hospital and I took him for a walk and he really did'nt want to go because he must have felt the tightness of his wound. So it is right they know when they are getting better and she is showing you by doing her hop skip and JUMP!! My boy did get away from me very early on and he fell I was sick thinking he'd done him self harm but he was fine. He got up and went galloping round and round till he calmed down. Now that was scary.
As time went on his wound healed up lovely and you would never know he had had surgery. He had a long swellling to and it's called a dema or something like that. and it's normal and will eventually go.
just stick to your routine and your mare will be fine beleive me.
I have kept him on a stricked routine since never changing his feed and he has never looked back. I kept a diary on him and found out that carrots were the cause of his colic.
Good Luck

Some pictures of her last night (sorry about the light) and one of her scar. They are quite similar but was trying to get a decent on of her without much luck

I even think her condition looks slightly better than when she first came home on Wednesday 9th:

Scar looks good a wee bit red it's still early days. Dont touch it I never bathed my horses I just let time heal it. She is looking like her condition has improved too.

She has very pink skin which is making it look a bit worse I think... You can see how pink it is to the left of the scar on her midline

The scar is a lot smaller than I thought it was going to be too.
