Had my youngster for a week and a half now (although seems like alot longer!).
She is 5, but very much has the mind/attitude of a 3 year old. She was only broken in last summer, and she is very backwards.
Her walk is lovely, very floaty and bouncy and straight. She is less sure of herself in trot, always trying to go faster/slow down, and is very wobbily, but her paces are lovely and she shows potential.
Haven't cantered her yet, due to the weather (we dont have a menage) and she doesnt have any shoes on so will slip, mum cantered her on the lunge though and she goes very fast!

We have done some pole work with her, she was very unsure to start with, but she is getting better and better every day, and on Saturday we jumped her

we put up a very very very tiny xpole and she didn't know what to do and knocked it down over and over again! so we put it up to a raised pole, again she knocked it down, so mum got out a filler thing my dad made (like a plank but bigger, about 1ft6), and she ducked out to start with, but she jumped it next time and by the end of it she was jumping it REALLY nicely

Anyway, onto the "ouch"..
Today I got home from school and brought her in from the field, and had to lead her past my sisters mare, who lunges at Lady and bites her, and then they start kicking at each other- i nearly get trampled on!
Anyway got her tacked up, lead her into the big field (only field fit for riding in atm!), and my sisters mare starts galloping round the field- Lady tries to dart off with me but calms down and we start working. As I turned Lady away from my sisters mare, my sisters mare suddenly starts leaping around being a silly bugger, and so my pony copies..!
She started broncing, I lost my stirrups straight away

but managed to sit her broncs easily, then she turns towards the fence and then sharply turns the other way, hence i come off

totally covered in mud and very winded.

Brought mare in...it was getting dark and started to rain and sisters mare was still being an idiot. Just got in, I am in pain, feels like i have bruised/torn something on my right side just below my ribs, it hurts to breath and move

So now i feel abit defeated, it feels like i gave in on her, she was making so much process but now we are going to have to bring her back to the start again
frown.gif
Now im abit scared of riding her too.. and we cant do anything about my sisters mare, she wont go in the stable so we have no choice but to ride next to her

Gutted, and in pain, but thanks for reading

Well, firstly take arnica and ibuprofen, have a hot bath. If you don't feel better, or have trouble breathing, go to A & E and get checked out - better safe than sorry.
Secondly, you knew you were going to fall off at some point...and you're ok. Sounds as if your girl was a bit upset before you rode her.
So try to think positively - she's done really well for you up until today, and she is only a baby...and babies copy adult horses.
Can't you either confine the other mare to a small area of the field (preferably far away) or lunge your horse next to broncing mare so she learns not to react.
You'll be fine....

Ooh ... painful!!

When mine was first broken as a youngster, I was told to avoid horses running towards him in a field at all costs ... the only thing I was told to avoid .... as it was a guaranteed frightener for him.

I know you can't do this but would it be possible for your sister's horse to be held until you were on and settled at least?

Thanks,
yes your right it could of been alot worse!
The way our fields are set up makes that pretty awkward, there isn't much of a way to confine my sisters horse. My mare is used to my sisters, they are turned out next to each other every day. We do have a field over the road which is out of view of the rest of them, once it gets lighter after school we will try and school her in there instead.

Thank you for replying

Yeah we had given her a haynet today, she wasn't interested though!

Thanks everyone, we are going to get my sister to hold her mare in the yard next time, hopefully this will help, but it will be abit akward to do this every time we ride.

My sisters mare gallops around the field whenever i ride, but luckily my other mare is really sane and sensible and it doesn't bother her.

Don't give up...apart from a few bruises you sound as if you're doing really well and making steady progress.
Put it down to an off day, take precautions to avoid it happening again.
Then - onwards and upwards

Hope your alright. personally, wouldn't have introduced jumps yet, particularly as, from what you've said, she is very unbalanced. I'd just give her time to get her balance, and be a bit more confident with herself in 3 paces.

She sounds a challenge - but then that is probably what you were looking for, with a 5yo broken last summer!

Good Luck.

Poor you! When you think about it, it's not surprising she reacted to your sisters horse charging about. It's unfortunate you came off and hurt yourself but she's young and had been progressing well. Move your sister's horse next time you ride and I'm sure she'll be fine.

You could also try hoof boots which would enable you to ride more easily with traction on some surfaces , although they might not help in really deep slippy mud as my unshod 4yo is actually better without them in that. But with borderline conditions as it starts to dry out it could be a real help. I use Boa boots and they are great.
