Hi,

Hubbie rang the pound this morning and the owners didn't come to collect her. I am off at lunch to buy a car harness for her and collecting her at 4. Have no idea where she is going to go - my cats will never forgive me!

turns out they would only have had to pay about 50 euro to get her back.

Anyway, here goes! she deserves a second chance.

Good luck with her, hope it all goes well. You'll have to put up some pics once you've got her home

Thanks. i think I will need it. i am so worried about my cats they are old and have never been introduced to a dog. Anyone got any advice as to how you introduce a dog to two elderly nerotic cats?

I am so worried about the responsibility of having her. If she is an escape artist, what if she gets out and kills sheep etc? there are loads of sheep in the area.

Oh what am I doing!!!!!!

Get a baby gate and allocate her to 1 room...this will allow the cats to see her...but her not to beable to get to them...they will most likely hide and sulk for a good while...but if they do decide to hang around...the more she sees them the more she will get used to them....unless of course she is used to cats

then that would make fo a better situation.
As long as your cats can get away...without being chased when threatened....they should cope.

I usually put a baby gate on my kitchen for new arrivals....I feed the cats on the stairs...this way the dogs have a good view of the cats, but cannot get to them...and the cats are calm as they are eating, the cats re also receiving a reward..in the form of their food...for venturing down near the dogs...so no reason for the dog to go bonkers...if they do...I reprimand them ...esp the bigger dogs.

GOOD LUCK....that little doggi is so lucky

Re.....escaping...when u first get her...supervise her in the garden and never shut the door on her....if at any time a dog will try to escape...its in a new strange environment...when they can not get back inside.

You are following your heart, and good for you. Whether it works out or not, you will have saved the dog. You should look at the next few weeks/months as a trial period. If it doesn't work out, you have the chance to find her another loving home - it doesn't sound like she has known such a thing in the past if the owners couldn't find 50 euros ... my own dogs are priceless to me.

Please let's have a piccy when you get her. It would be lovely to hear her progress, and you can always ask on here if you encounter any problems. I can't advise you about the cats as I don't have any myself, but I know plenty of people who do have both dogs and cats. Just give any problems a bit of time, and you will probably find things work out. For example when I got my rescue dog, there were fights initially between him and the dog I already had, but they soon got over it and are absolutely devoted to each other now.

I do wish you the very best of luck, and well done again for taking care of this poor dog, I really hope it works out.

Like the idea of the baby gate. It's worked really well for a friend of mine and her new dog.

Look forward to seeing the photo's - and to finding out what her new name will be.

Good luck with her, she's a very lucky dog and I really hope all works out for the best,,, well done you!!

I echo everything CALA said about introducing the cats to the dog.

My cats and dog are now firm friends after a slightly wobbly start (I can't even really handle my cats as they came to us practically feral so you can imagine what a disadvantage I started with).

I'm so pleased that you've decided to help this dog out, its sucha heartwarming story, I hope it goes really well for you.

I may have missed the follow up post but what did your boss say about using one of the barns during the day?

Oh and photo's would be wonderful!

Oh Dear,

i just sspoke to my vet and she has advised not to get the dog under any circumstances. she said my cats will go mad and spray everywhere as they have never seen a dog before - they are both indoor cats.

i have rung a couple of charities but one is full to the brim and the other cant take any dogs for 2 weeks because of a case of kennel cough so they have onlt have a recorded message.

i rang another charity that operates out of the dog pound and she said that she wasn't aware of any dog matching the description and she was heading off to investigate. I think I am in so much trouble with the dog pound now as we said we would take her but now I am being told that my cats will stray like mad things if I do!

AND my battery just died in my mobile so I havent a clue whats going on!

well she knows my two cats very well so that coupled with her professional experience would give her opinion a fair bit of weight in my book. With her greyhound blood, however small an amount it is, I am worried as you don't know what she was exposed to before i found her. I know greyhounds can get on very well with cats if the introduction is done right and if they haven't been trained to chase but i just don't know what she will be like with them or them with her!

I have rung hubbie and he is on the case to find out what the hell is going on.

Strange...I have never whitnessed a cat spraying because of the presene of a dog

I have taken literally hundreds of dogs and cats in over the years...never has the problem the vet is describing.
Your cats are more likely to hide to be honest....but if the dog is introduced discretely...even by means of a crate if neccesary.

I recently took on a 10 year old Siamese cat...that had been attacked by dogs and detested tham....all the family had dogs so could not take her on for the family member ridding of her...I placed her in a crate for 6 weeks in my sitting room...she was scared at first and hid under her bed.....now she lives freely with the dogs.
I would give it a go....I find as long as the cats have an escape route and the dog is safely confined...its worth a try.

because they are two rescues as well. one we got when we lived in the UK. He had been kept in a flat on the 11th floor of a tower block since he was a kitten. then, after 9 years, they left him into a cat rescue saying that they were moving and couldn't take him. we have tried letting him out and basically he is terrified and bolts blindly - into fences etc. We are working with him and have him so he can go out on a harness at the mo. The other, again a rescue we only have since nov. She is 11 now and has never been outside. She has been shipped around a lot in the passed couple of years so we are just waiting for her to settle in and then we will introduce her to out side. Will see how it goes with her. i hate them just being indoors all the time. I like a cat to be able to be a cat and have the freedom to go out but am just working with what I have!

I have to say that a friends two indoor cats started fouling the house quite badly when a new boyfriend appeared on the scene with dog in tow......

you may very well be right CALA - if they have never seen a dog, maybe they will be Ok.

just got a mail from hubbie. they are putting her down this evening for def if i am not there. all the charities are full but they said that they are shipping a load of dogs over to the dogs trust in the UK on thursday and if i get pictures of her to them they will try and include her in that. (Sounds horrible to be honest but I know needs must!)

i am off to buy a harness for my temp new dog! Still have no idea where i am going to put her!

i have heard of them spraying alright when they get upset etc. Suppose I will find out tonight wont I!!!!!

I really have the most patient land lord in the world. Wait for the post tomorrow of "any advise on how to gte cat pee out of........."

Oh yeah...they deffo spray
crazy.gif
....I have just never had them spray because of the dogs..its generally other cats...but as Amymay says...it must happen...goodluck anyway.

fingers crossed for you, at least you are giving it a go and giving her a chance, I would wait and see how the cats react, if introduced slowly( crate/gate) I would think they may well get along
smile.gif

Even if you just take her in a keep her in a spare room for a while with the door shut it would be no worse than the pound and a lot better than the alternative! Look upon it as a temporary measure and get her passed on to a rescue asap. Well done for going that extra mile and I hope it works out for all concerned!

Oh please give it a go MooCow. I'm keeping everything crossed for you.

I've found with my cats that they would hate another cat being introduced but will tolerate a dog. I have had rescue dogs who have never seen cats let alone lived with one and we have persevered - believe me it is possible for them all to get used to one another. My present two are never going to snuggle up together but they respect each others space.

GOOD LUCK!

When I introduced my first dog to cats I just let them get on with it, the cat will stand up for itseld (Hopefully). After one scratch on the nose Orry hasn't chased the cats since, and thats nearly 8 years ago. Out now only one cat will curl up with any of out three dogs. Just give it a go! This dog sounds like she chose you! I echo everything people have said about the supervision outdoors. If you are really worried about her espaping, but her on a long lead when you walk her and let her out? I used to use a lunge line with Orry before his obedience boot camp :3
