Oh mannnnnnnn! How fed up am I!!!!!!

Tomorrow it is 20 weeks since I broke my talus bone and fibula from a friends youngster rearing over backwards ontop of me and squishing my foot!

For the last four weeks I have been given the go ahead to partially weight bear
smile.gif
I was at physio on Wednesday, had a great session and have been making loads of progress
cool.gif
Thursday I was due to see my surgeon and registrar and have an xray. My physio Alice and I were quite excited for my appointment in the hope of getting the go ahead for full weight bearing in the next few weeks... but no!!
crazy.gif

Had my xray and although the surgeon is happy saying there's progress everytime he sees my foot and my xrays, there is white showing at the top of the dome bit of my talus indicating a lack of blood supply. This could mean my bone may die off, crumble and/or collapse!

but on the bright side, it hasn't done just yet, and hopefully it won't!

Yes I cried in front of my surgeon.... and had to walk out into a waiting room full of people looking a right mess lol!

My next appointment to see him, and have further xrays is in 8 weeks time, and until then.... only partial weight bearing until they give me the nod.

I was hoping to be walking by Christmas!

Anyway, after having a day to sulk and feel sorry for myself, I decided what will be will be, and try to make the best of a bad situation!

Started to think.... "if I wanted to encourage blood circulation in my horses what would I do.... Magnetic boots of course!!!" Searched the net, found some magnetic ankle supports, can anyone recommend one that will have the contact/effect where my talus is??

Sorry to whinge and be feeling sorry for myself, I know I am fortunate, it could have been so much worse! If you managed to get this far, I am impressed, thank you! Have a special coffee on me! xx

oh I am really sorry to hear this, I know how you feel after buggering my ankle up. You count down the days til the next visit to the surgeon only to be told you need another 6 weeks with the cast or another operation etc etc.

Cheer up x

A friend of mine did this too - was rock climbing, slipped off the cliff face and landed on her feet
crazy.gif

She ignored all doc's orders and did more on it than she should have done. Surgeon later told her that if she'd followed their advice and rested longer the bone would have died off - great! So, she saved it herself.

I'm not suggesting you do the same of course! Hope it heals well.

I broke this bone, about 18yrs ago now. Was told that a lot of parachute people break this one - I knew I flew off but thats ridiculous!

I also had the whole "no blood supply" problem and it took me 6months to be given the go ahead to weight bear. However, this was after getting a second opinion from another doctor who disagreed about the lack of blood supply. I was dubious so he had it proved to me by me having to drink some sort of dye and then they could scan the foot & trace the dye was actually getting to the right place - something like that. I remember crying a lot too from frustation of each time going back in and telling me that I couldn't walk. The only "up" point was that it was Olympic year!

Its worth bearing in mind getting a second opinion if you are getting desperate. All the best, I know how you feel.

I'm so sorry - I had a bad riding accident several years ago and fractured the head of my femur in several places (now pinned and plated) and my spine in two places.

Please do NOT give up hope - your body is an amazing thing and will heal (albeit slower than you want). I was in a metal frame and a wheelchair but I always knew (and was so determined) that I would walk/ride again. Eventually I did but the walking came quicker than the riding!!

Keep your chin up and remain positive - there are so many people on here (such as Puppy and many more) who have suffered horrendous injuries and come through the other side.

Kick on.........!!!!

Oh I do hope you continue to progress and get good news soon. I remember you posted about your fall on my thread about the rearer - well if its any comfort I listened to what happened to you and haven't ridden the horse since and I'm swapping him next week for something else.

I'm a runner and generally the "new" approach in phsyio is to encourage weight bearing exercise to enhance the blood supply asap and strengthen it and the surrounding areas with eccentric exercises. Not at all saying this would be any good for a bone though but some surgeons can be very old school.

That's what they said to my friend... after they admitted they were wrong

Sorry OP, not trying to scare you, just don't want you to end up with a wrecked ankle. Perhaps get a few more opinions (medical ones I mean, not from people on here

)

Nikken have a variety of magnets that can be applied to any part of the body and have been successfully used to increase circulation in cases such as yours.

Gosh, I am really touched by everyone's responses! xx

VictoriaEDT - Thank you, what you said is exactly how I feel! Glad I'm not the only one! I love seeing my surgeon, I get anxious when I have long periods of time without check ups! xx
grin.gif

Misst - Your welcome for the coffee, specials are my favourite! Thanks for the healing vibes! xx
grin.gif

Charmaine18 - indeed it is a long time to be out of action! My surgeon said I am only in early stages with it all! Initially they said elevation and non-weight bearing for 12 weeks - that would have been up to early October. I 'assumed' I would start weight bearing in October, by November be walking, by Christmas riding, and was hoping to be able to compete early Summer.... my rose tinted glasses have been removed and thrown away lol! xx
grin.gif

Woopsii - oh mannnnnn! You're poor friend! How did she do hers? Does she ride? xx
grin.gif

Muchkin - ouccchh! That must have hurt! Did (s)he have to get air lifted? Nice to hear your friend came out of the other side! No worries, I know exactly what you are saying! I have searched on the net about it, there's some forums with Surgeons who will chat to you. Might look into that. If I'm getting too anxious, I will go to my doctors and see if they will put me in touch with another hospital if it comes to that xx
grin.gif

Brighthair - that's a great idea thanks, I didn't realise they did human cortaflex! I have been taking seven seas advanced joint care with Glucosamine, Omega 3 and Chrondroitin in it! But will look into Cortaflex! xx
grin.gif

Highlandponylass - thank you for the get well soon - I do hope it's sooner rather then later - wishful thinking! These things take time - or so it would appear lol xx
grin.gif

Dixie - I shouldn't really laugh, but I couldn't help giggle at your 'flying off' pun!! I never appreciated how serious this break was! It has taken me months to start to understand it, and even now, there's alot to be learnt/experienced from this break. I honestly don't think I realise how this will affect me for the rest of my life! I've just turned 26, so I dread getting arthritus so young. I keep imaging what it's like when I get older! The dye thing is a great idea - definitely something I am going to suggest to my surgeon! Thanks for that! xx
grin.gif

Doris68 - blimey that sounded like a horrendous accident to get such horrendous injuries! Poor you! Thanks for the positive vibes! I do try get on with it and keep my chin up, but I have the odd relapse! Right now, all I want is to be able to walk up those frigging stairs lol! I will come through this, whatever the outcome, I have to! Other people on here, just like you, are all so inspiring, it gives me hope and strength! xx
grin.gif

Ihorse - Thanks for that link! I remember watching him on Top Gear when he raced up and down a mountain against Jeremy Clarkson in a fast car! That's something to bear in mind! Thanks for that, made me feel alot better about my situation xx
grin.gif

Headless_Horsewoman - I am glad to hear about you swapping your horse, after this, I can truely say a rearer is not worth it! I hope everyone learns from my painful mistake and don't have to go through this! I am just so pleased I wasn't paralysed - or worse - dead. Perhaps dramatic, but definitely possible! I must admit, I never appreciated the whole broken bones thing. Didn't appreciate how it would effect my entire life, those who surround me, and of course, my dogs and horses. It interests me in what you say about being a runner and the new approach to physio with enhancing blood circulation! I'm at physio Wednesday, I will quiz them on this thanks xx
grin.gif

MrsMozart - thank you very much for the hug and hot choccy! My belly is loving it.... my thighs and my fat behind definitiely aren't lol! I think further advice may be something to look into if I don't get some answers in the next couple of months. I know they can't overly say what will definitely happen, very much take a day at a time and how long is a piece of string sort of answers at the moment - but at some point I will want more then that! xx
grin.gif

TayloredEquestrian - thank you for that link - the website was great! I'm interested in getting the ankle support, socks and innersoles! Good to hear you have heard of good results from using their products - gives me faith in ordering form them! Thank you xx
grin.gif

Soulfull - thank you for the huge hugs and healing vibes! I am being a very good girl, and so hopefully my behaviour will be rewarded lol! How's your ankle coming?? Did you need to doanything to enchance blood supply? How's it coping with riding? Gives me hope that I will be riding one day again! Please don't over do it, I don't want to hear of you having to start from scratch again! xx
grin.gif

byggiz - thanks for that link - the loose Nikken Magnets would really be useful to get to the spot where I need them most! Think they are definitely worth a try! xx
grin.gif

Anyway, I am beaming ear to ear.... I went to presentation night for our local riding club last night, and I am pleased to announce I still managed to bag the open runner up trophey for the year lol! Not bad to say I only jumped half the season! I was grumpy going because I had to give back my trophies from the year before, didn't expect in a million years to 'hop' out with one too! xx
